2006 sportsman 800efi hard first crank
Hey all, newbie here and need some help...I bought my wheeler in 2008 and it's always started with a very hard first crank, in fact the starter stops cranking for a second, then resumes cranking just fine and starts and runs great. After 11 years of this and a few batteries later, it won't crank unless I use a jumper box or charger and even then starts the same way with a very hard first crank. That being said, it would be nice to hear what other think before I go through all the nonsense it takes to replace the starter. I certainly appreciate the help! Thank you who answer in advance!!

I have an 05 800 EFI and I suspect they are basically the same. Question. I have 2 units with batteries. The other is an 06 500. The 800 consistantly has starting issues and batteries seem to last a shorter time. Even with a jump pack, it would have a "thud" sound, not the clicking of an undercharged battery a time or two before starting. I am suspecting a battery drain somewhere and will have to run a draw test. Regardless of the drain, even with a jump pack, key still needs a couple of tries before it goes.
I am suspecting that the starter and/or the drive gear might be an issue. The battery (lead acid to Lithium Phosphate) is testing good. If I am going to do a starter, I would probably do a drive gear while it was being worked on. I am also wondering about the solenoid. I disconnected the battery to see if it will drain or not but I believe it is draining.
Relevance? I think that I was reading somewhere that a bad starter can cause a drain. Thoughts?
