Go easy on me guys--new member here. I have a good old question. Recently acquired a 2008 ranger 700xp. AWD will only work once in a while and so far only when it is on jack stands. Checked per service manual and have the 12 volts at the coil plug. Coil resistance reading is 28.3 ohm manual calls for max of 26 ohm, is this enough to make a difference ? Pulled the front differential and everything appears ok no wear even clean fluid. Checked the cage etc and found no problems. only have like 3000 miles on it but hate to spend $1000 plus for a new differential. Any help is appreciated

I could be wrong but i think you have on demand 4X4.
Meaning when the machine senses the rear wheels slipping the front engages.when just driving you are in 2X4. Makes it much easier to steer.

You are correct it is an on-demand system not full time only when the rear wheels lose traction with the AWD switch engaged but it does not engage at all. Had to dig it out of the sand twice in the last few weeks due to no 4 wheel.

I would start with the out of spec ohm reading as that could very well be the entire problem.

I do not disagree with what you are saying as this was also my thought, but after reading an older post from the Polaris experts he says it is ok up to 30 ohms. So I am now confused and at a cost of $500 for the coil and plate which is the only way you can buy it just trying to get a little more info. Thanks for the help

Just wanted to follow up with you again to say thanks for the input. Have not had any other input but by doing some voltage and wiring checks either in the speedometer not sending the RPM signal to the ECU or the ECU not working correctly. In either case it appears to be a signal problem and pricey to fix so it looks like I will have a two wheel drive machine. Thanks again & ride safe

Shame we will never know what is wrong but understandable as sometimes its just not worth it.
Take care.
