hi,
Thanks for everyones reply.I will think about giving the scrambler 400 2X4 a chance, but I'm a little bet wary because its a 2-stroke.The reason that I'm wary is because my friend had a banshee and sold it for a 400ex because the maintenance was a killer not only for him ,but his pocket book also.I will see though!!!
Thanks,
Dan
P.S.
If anyone has any more info it would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have a 2000 400 2X4 and have modded it out pretty well. The weakest link in the 400 engine is the stock piston. Above about 50 HP the piston will not survive a heavy right thumb. The stock engine makes about 36 to 38 HP, with a RCR Stage 1 kit ( I prefer the HPD Trail pipe ), it will bump the output to about the 45 HP level, and will have a SIGNIFICANT increase in acceleration. From there, your wallet is the limit on the mods. I just put a Wiseco forged piston in mine and the total cost was under $ 200.00 with me spinning the wrenches.
I can't recommend Rick Ritter @ RCR enough. His customer service is the best in the business.

Nemo,
"I CAN'T Recommend Rick Ritter? His Customer Service is Best in the Business."
Ummmm....Most people prefer good customer service...lol...I think I know what you meant anyway. FYI, I just purchased the Stage 1 Kit from Rick and I too compliment him on great service, and he taught me a few things that I didn't know. Later.

I got a Scrambler 400 4x4. I suggest looking at a different machine if you are getting a 2x4. The scrambler is a heavy machine that doesn't handle like some other sport machines. I really like mine because I use the 4 wheel drive constantly where I ride. Here are some answers to your questions.
1. found to be a very reliable machine. Few problems.
2. Hanling is excellent compared to bigger quads but nothing like the 400ex
3. not sure on hp but is very snappy and tons of torque.
4.I race my buddy with a 400ex, both stock, and they are both about the same. The 2 stroke 400 is a little snappier. I also rode a 500 and it stayed with the honda until we reached higher
speeds.
5.Where are you riding?
6.Both 500 and 400 have equal maintance. Polaris machines are difficult to work on if you don't have the right tools.
7.No idea

10.rittercycle.com has an excellent stage one kit for $325. It comes with pipe, silencer, clutch springs, air box mod, etc.
11.Make sure everything works correctly. When I bought mine, the starter didn't work and I didn't think nothing of it. I didn't have a fun time taking it off.
12.You can get 60hp for less than $2000, but not a lot less. The ritter stage one kit mentioned earlier is great. Other great polaris performance parts come from hot seat performance.
