I have a 2001 Scrambler 500 4x4. My friend has a 2000 400ex (piped, k&n filter, carborator) and he eats me for lunch every time in a drag race. Now lately i have been hearing people say how there sport's and even express's can beat a stock 400ex in a drag. Is this true? If so, there must be something wrong w/ my scrambler. I would say that it is very fast for a 4x4, it tops out at about 65. I know that the sport is faster than me but i don't think it would be very much of a difference. My question is, what can i do to make my scrambler faster? My dealer told me that if it was up to him, he wouldn't mess w/ it because he has put pipes and filters and all kinds of stuff on other scrambler 500's and he says it doesn't help at all. He said that one guy told him it slowed his down! I am willing to spend good money on it to speed it up all that i can so any advice would help greatly. Thanks

The 500 is much tougher to get more power and speed from than the 400. The 2-stroke engine responds tremendously to every mod I added. It has no problems with stock...or piped 400ex's!

On the 500 you could add a pipe, clutch kit, roller clutch and do a bit with the airfilter. Some have spoken about Cams and even heard of a bigbore kit. But for all that money the results are nowhere near those of a 2-stroke 400. Pipe and cltch a 400 and it is like night and day. Pipe and clutch a 500 it will do about 1/3 of what it did to the 400.

Hey,

I think that I started the 400ex post that you are refering to. Anyway, I agree with everything that Xplor said. If you are going to buy a quad and leave it stock, then either choice is okay, some people prefer 2 stroke, others prefer 4. However, if you are buying a quad that you want to mod and make high performance (easy mods that is), then most of the time 2 stroke is the way to go. Like Xplor said, a set of pipes for a 2 stroke can make a world of difference, and a set of pipes on a 4 stroke may not even get you 3hp. I agree with you though, from what I have been hearing about Xpresses being able to mop up 400ex's yours sure should be able to. I thought that the stock 400 Scrambler, and the Stock 500 Scrambler were really close speed wise. Anyway, I'm sure that you could mod your quad so that you could beat your buddies EX, but I wouldn't go further than pipes, jetting, air filter, and a clutch kit. I'd rather do easy stuff like that, than get up to my elbows in the motor because sometimes speed just doesn't mean that much to me, and I wouldn't want to sacrifice reliability. I think that HPD makes some 4 stroke mods. Check out www.hpd-inc.com and see what you can find. Also, I am supposed to be racing the EX this weekend (Stock vs. Stock). I plan on Video taping the race and posting it on the web along with the results. Good luck with your beast.

Oh, and about the guy who said he lost power by putting mods on...Maybe his Jetting was off or something. If you put pipes on and don't re-jet about all you will do is make more noise, and not power. Later.

ok, in a drag race a stock scrambler, be it 4x4, 400 OR 500 it still will not beat a stock 400ex. It will beat a 300ex pretty bad but NOT A 400ex. I have a friend with a 400 sport and one with a 400 scrambler, I have also raced a 500 4x4. Its always the same. (we are all good riders by the way, they can all race to the ability of the machine, so its not rider error.)

the 400ex pulls out of the whole about 3-4 quad lengths and stays ahead atleast that much until top speed. then the 400ex pulls even more ahead. My 400ex will go 67-69 stock and the scramblers will go about 63-65 and that is it!
no questons about it, anyone will tell you. the stock honda is faster.

if you raced in a bud bog, well then you might have a different story.

and hahahahahahha.........I am still laughing at the express story!!!!!!! hahahhahaaha, what a joke!

Wow, the 4-Stroke ex can get the 2 stoke out of the hole? I would have guessed that the Sport would stomp the ex at first, and then the ex would catch up. That would mean that a stock ex can get a stock banshee until top end then. Boy, I can't wait until I find out for myself tomorrow. Stock 400L vs. Stock 400ex on pavement. See ya.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ,ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ,ZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Oh Iam sorry I must have fell asleep while racing that 400ex
good thing I didnt fall off my sport,or I may have lost!!!hehe
when my 400 was stock it was a close race with a 400ex at comp hill glamis/buttercup sometimes I would win sometimes the 400ex would. After the hpd pipe it was about 3-4 lenths in my favor, after the rest of my mods the 400ex is just a "4 stroke joke" on the big hills and my 400 is only a trail mod!

um......no, a banshee will beat a sport or a scrambler in a drag ALWAYS on good traction. ALWAYS. Unless you have a kid on the banshee that can't ride or there is something wrong.

A banshee will beat a 400ex also.

Everyone knows this, where the h have you been?

seeing how the 400ex weighs about 150 lbs lighter I don't see how you are suprised that it wouldn't get the hole shot. not to mention the whole automatic tranny thing.

I have done it many times, with good riders, don't tell me that youwill win stock for stock, you won't. you'll see when you race.

Scamber 400's/Sport 400's can usually win a Banshee and 400EX off the line. Then they just catch up later because they have higher top end.
