Just found a '99 scram 500 in the paper for $3300, So price sounds good, what do you think kbb.com said 3110 for trade in and 4520 for retail. Also, What are some things i should look for, I know to look at the tires to see how much it was ridden but what other things should i look for in general and Scram specific. And also I really haven't decided whether i want the 400 or 500, So correct me if I am wrong but this is what i have been previously told about the two. 400 is easy to mod because of it bieng 2 stroke, both are supposed to be the same as far as reliability, 500 is better if I require slow speeds( Which i have to doat times for various reasons) where 400 has to be kept in it's best RPMrange. Does the 400 have to be rebuilt often, I am kinda scared i am gonna have to rebuild it alot and replace pistons, ect. but as long as i leave it stock should i be ok or still have these problems(whichever i get it will probably be left stok for a year at least knowing how long it takes me to make decisions). Oh yeah, how often will i have to fill a 400 with oil? Thanks in advance for all who reply.

Rebuilding shouldn't even be a concern with the 400. My buddy has a 95 400, he just rebuilt it, not because it needed it, but because he wanted to upgrade the piston to a Wiseco. If you are looking to ad mods, the 400 is the only way to go, and yes, it has great low end for technical, slower riding. As far as the oil goes, it uses so little, that you will wonder if your injector is working. My vote goes towards the 400. I'm sure the 500 is a great quad, but I need mods, and the 400 has mods written all over it.

As far as the 99 model goes, if it's used, I'm sure the tie rod ends are shot, along with the lower steering post bushing. Don't let that deter you from buying though, they are both cheaply, and easily replaced in your garage.

Oh yeah what about cold weather starting? on the 500? on the 400? you probably by now can tell i am a little scared of 2-strokes but then again they are alot easier to mod but then again all my other quads have been smaller and never modded so i am sure i will be satisfied w/ stock power ... well at least for a few years. Also Shouldn't a clutch kit do they same for both since it really isin't a engine mod, but more a driveline mod?

i owned a 97 scrambler 400 until this last winter and now own the 500 scrambler. my 400 was stock and i never had a single problem with it. it ran great when you had to run slow and was an adrenalin rush when you hit the throttle. the 500 is a fine machine too but does lack that snap you get from the 2 stroke. i'm sure you would enjoy either but don't be overly concerned about the 2 stroke, it is very reliable and durable.

Currently I have a '99 scrambler 400 and has excellent torque of the get go. I can take my buddy on his 500 but his has more power. It is also correct that the 400 responds well to mods. Just a pipe can add 10 hp. The 500 isn't easy to get more speed.

I got a 1998 Scrambler 500 4x4 for $4000. It came with a chasis skid plate, rear rack, rear rack bag, hand gaurds, DG front bumper, extra set of bear claws and an extra set of aluminum wheels(along with stock wheels/tires already on the bike). But for a 1999, $3300 sounds good.

Sorry Jpstercj7, not in my budget but why are you selling anyways. Also I haven't been able to find many scram's in the papers around here. Only about 5 in the last 2-3 months, 4 were 500 4x4's and the other was a 400 2x4. So i'm trying not to be picky and the more I think about it 3300 dollars is starting to sound really good compared to all the others i've seen. i did a search for 1999 500 4x4 scrams on cycle trader and the lowest price was 3600 dollars. And the one i'm looking at(Well actually haven't looked at yet) supposedly is in great shape and only has 5 hours run time(I guess he either rode it and did something that scared the $hit out of him and he dosen't want to ride it anymore or he just dosen't get as much time to ride as he had hoped). Anyway one more question, i have been hearing alot obout 2-stroke bieng banned in places and i know honda is supposedly going to quit making them so i am kind of scared i'm not going to get to ride it on public trails for long if i get a 400. So here's what i think i have talked myself into, look at the 500 if it is in good shape and he hasen't sold it yet i'll take it, if i don't get it i'll keep loking at 400's and 500's and whenever i find a good one for a good price i'll get it, kinda a luck of the draw thing, so i dont have to keep worrying about it any more. But if anybody else has any comments about either, i still would like to hear them.
