Several weeks ago, in part of a post I read here, (don’t know the author) this guy said he’d owned an HPD steering dampener that was absolutely worthless and an Aaen steering dampener that was worth every penny. I read that with great interest because I’d just parted with $130 for an HPD steering dampener. At that point I considered returning it but it was already installed and I wanted to give HPD the benefit of the doubt. I was wrong, he was right. I hate to say it but this thing IS worthless. After weeks of “testing” on the trail I can’t tell the difference between the high setting and the low one. If it wasn’t for the almost bird-like whistle it makes with every turning movement I wouldn’t even know it’s there. With the front end raised you can feel the effect just a little but it doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do, so don’t waste your money on it. (Sorry Darrel) the only thing stopping me from removing it is making the time to do it. The whistle is driving me nuts.
I know a guy with the Aaen dampener on his machine but we haven’t really talked about whether or not he likes it.

I'm the guy who tried out both & both cylinders seem to have the same resistance to movement but because the Aaen is leveraged in a better location it resists movement of the handle bars 100% better than the HPD which does basically nothing at all. The Aaen is alittle too stiff sometimes on the highest setting so I might back it off a couple clicks. I wanted a steering dampner that was stiffer & weaker than I wanted at the 2 extreme settings so I could pick the optimum setting in between the 2 limits that was right for me. The Aaen unit will give you that option.
