Increase Acceleration with Heavier Tires?
#1
I just recently put on a set of 4 brand new 25 inch Titan 589's for my 99 400 Explorer. The front 2 weigh 22lbs each and the back 2 weigh 26lbs each. I allready have a pipe and k&n, but its take off is still real slow, so i wanted to know what else to add for mods? If I just change primary spring will that help? what I switch primary spring with? where can I buy this off the internet? Let me know what mods will help, thanks for your opinion,
Jerry

Jerry,
by changing to a different spring, you will change what rpm the clutch will engage. By going to a spring that will engage at a higher rpm, your Xplorer will already have the revs high enough to get the holeshot you had with the stock set-up.

From reading other posts, some have had good results with just changing the spring. But not going with the entire clutch kit might result in premature wear of the other parts in the clutch.

Yes you can change the gearing. I put an 11 tooth countershaft sprocket on my xplorer. It gave it a lot more low end power. It will wheelie easily in high range now. It will mainly affect the engagement of the 4wd but doesn't mess it up. You should buy a goodyear powerstreak belt and put it on. I went through 3 belts in about 3 months as soon as i put my tires on. Now i have been using the same belt for over a year and no signs of wear.
