I just purchased a new 2000 model Polaris
Xpedition 425. I would like to use this atv for trail riding in Colorado as well as around home. My elevation is 1300ft. Do I need to make any changes to operate this atv at 8000-12000ft.? Does anyone have any experience with this atv on mountain trails?

I've ridden my Expedition to 10,000 feet without re-jetting from the sea level (stock) jetting without difficulty. I'd fully expected to have an over-rich burble, but it didn't happen, as it did with my Honda Foreman 450 (prior to rejetting it). Did you get the jetting sheet with your Expedition? If not, I'll dig it up and post the jetting numbers versus altitude.

You need to look for a guy on here who is called "Corncob" he recently had a computer crash but should be back on soon. He rides Colorado extensivly(lives there) and knows how the Polaris engines react to the Altitudes well.

In reply to Expeditioneer, yes I did get the jetting chart with the atv. Thank you for your reply, In past years I have had two Kawasaki Mojave's in Co. and have not had to rejet them. Last year we rode to the summit of Mt. Antero, over 14,000ft. It was running a little rich, but still performed OK. Scholfield pass was also a challenging trail. Too much fun! I'm glad to here that the Polaris performed OK at 10,000ft.

Smerk;
My wife and I attempted Mt. Antero but we ran into snow at 9,500' (per our Lowrance GPS) and had to turn back. We could see hikers above us. I can't wait to get back there and try it again next Fall. BTW, can Mount Princeton (just north of Mt. Antero) be ridden to the summit?

Expeditioneer;
Yes, Mt. Princeton can be summeted via a 4x4 road. I have not personally been to the top of it however.
I have been ridding with my wife on a Mojave in Co. for about 6 years. We have also been to the summits of Mt.Bross and Mt.Lincoln (just to the east of Antero and Princeton, also 14r's). A loop trail in that area starts at St.Elmo west to Tincup pass to the town of Tincup, south over Cumberland pass to Pitkin, east over Hancock pass to Hancock, Romley , and back to St.Elmo. In total this is about a 50-60 mile ride.In the last year this has gotten to be a busy trail, but still very scenic. One of our favorite campgrounds is the Mirror Lake campground(10,000ft) just east of Tincup. Several good 4x4 trail books are available, showing many of the best 4x4 trails (The Colorado Atlas and Gazzetteer, Colorado Backroads and 4-Wheel Drive Trails by Charles Wells, and The Adventures of the Pass Patrol by Larry Heck are just a few). I am certainly looking forward to trying out the Polaris Xpedition 425 out there next summer!
I've only got 30 miles on it so far, so I'd better get riding to get it broke in before we go. I think the 5 speed will be a big advantage to help hold those long, steep grades.

If your going to attemt Mt Antero you will have to wait till late august or sept.We were up there labor day weekend it was cold up high and only a little snow.We ride the tin cup area every once in awhile ,thats my favorite snowmobileing area.Scholfield pass into Marble and Crystall is a good run,have you been to the marble mine?You can come out of taylor park over cement creek into Cretted Butte thats a good one to.If your really adventures try RED CONE.There aqre acouple new trails at Salida that are supposed to be good also.Boy hard to shut up once get started with someone that has been there an done that.
