Kagey, I know that this is the Polaris forum, but I have a question for you. A friend of mine has a 96 300 4trax, and the cam just burned down. The cylinder looks perfect, but the cam does not! They were usind it fairly hard in some snow. Is there something else that will cause the cam to burn up. other than heat? Is there something else that needs to be looked at?
By the way, I got my SP500 sooooo stuck last Sunday. I am in the process of installing a warn 2,000 pound winch as we speak.
Later, Dave

Pasqualie; I have a nieghbor named Robbie who has a 300 Honda 4x4 its a 1996 model and it has been an absolute basket case in the engine dept since it was new. I though it was the only one ,it has had cams, heads and has been rebuilt twice ,fortunatly when he started having problems I was to busy to work on it and he carried it elsewhere. He still has it its not running and he's currently looking for a complete engine for it. As for the problem you state it sounds like a lack of lubrication for sure. Did he have oil in it? The cam is one of the first componants to be oiled when an engine is started. If it has a good oil level check for oil pressure problems be sure that oil is getting to the top of the engine to the valve gear. I would be certain of this before running the engine on a new cam ,it takes only a few minutes of no lubrication to ruin a new camshaft. Have the oiling system checked thoughrly before running the new camshaft and be certain to follow the proper break in procedure when installing the new cam so as to get the full effect of the new camshaft.
