I did install the reed spacer. No heat problems untill today. It fealt way hot. Why didn't Mike at HPD send me a richer needle two weeks ago?? He could have at least seen this as a possibility!

Can others get these EEG needles or just HPD?

CaptNemo, Dealer pulled out the seized piston and supposedly put in a smaller one top give me .004 clearance instaed of .003

Any negative effects of opening the choke 1/2 and trying to jet it like that... untill I get the EEG needle?

I got the EEG needle from a local bike shop. HPD is way to far away to get bits like that sent when you live in New Zealand!

Also never get a dealer to do engine work. Take it to a specialist engine reconditioner to get bored. Take the new poston when you get the bore done so they can make it match.

I may have this wrong, but if you have a spacer, you need to go one higher (richer) with the needle.

You good with the octane, I just wanted to make sure. I had a customer who had problems with a stock machine and he told me he was running on just pump gas. I come to find out later he was running 92 octane in a stock motor with OEM compression. In that case the fuel was burning to slow to allow the exhaust side of the piston and cylinder to cool off and cooked it. Listen to fasterthengas, he seems to have the handle on it. I don't have all that experience personnally with the 400s, just what I get a chance to see in the shop between chasing parts. Good luck.

Is the EEG needle especially made for the Kehein carb? HPD told me they were the only ones in North America to have the EGH ones...

Snowmobile dealers maybe??

Brian, Here's a link toCarb Parts Warehouse

I don't see a problem with running the choke on long runs, Just expect to foul a plug or two. You are running Pre-Mix, Right?

On a totally unrelated note, did you get the link to the "Herculiner" that I E-Mailed to you a while back?

Capt, I am pre-mixing. Could you send me the link (Herculiner)once again. All my e-mail files were zapped by that SnowWhite virus last month. Lost pretty much everything. I will check the adress. Thanks

Side question- If I do restrict the air intake a bit...wouln't this counteract the lean condition but just loose a bit of power?

The EEG is for the Keihin who make the 39PWK. My local bike shop rang the distributor, and I had the needle overnight!

Don't restrict the air itake, get the jetting right!

For the money, about $200, invest in a EGT gauge. Not the ones HPD have, but a Digitron or MyChron with a digital read out. This is the only way to get jetting totally accurate.

Brian, You've got mail.
The problem with restricting the airflow is, it's going to affect the full throttle metering more than the low throttle opening where we're having difficulties.
A snowmobile shop MAY have the needle. Carb Parts should have it, HPD will definately have it, but they have a $ 7.50 minimum shipping charge.
The .004" clearance still sounds a bit tight
