400 ENGINE MODS FOR GNCC RACING
#1
I HAVE A 400 4 X 4 AND IM GOING TO RACE IT IN THE GNCC. I HAVE THE CLUTCH MOD, PIPE, REEDS, AN NOW NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO NEXT. IT SEEMS LIKE IT JUST DOESNT PULL LONG. ITS GREAT OFF THE BOTTOM, WHEELING IS NO PROBLEM, BUT SEEMS LIKE IT RUNS OUT OF PULL AS IT GETS GOING. IM RUNNING THE STOCK CARB, HAVE SEVERAL AT MY DISPOSAL TO TRY. PISTON IS STILL STOCK ALSO, HEAD IS SHAVED 30, COMPERESSION IS ABOUT 11-1

A different carb would be the next logical step. Ritter does a nice job boring the stockers out to 35.5mm for $60. Throw a UFO in it, and mod the air box (if you have'nt already) and run! Or make the jump to a 38TMX, and lose the air box completely. Of course that's a bit more $$$.
Who's pipe are you using? Both Ritter and HPD do a fine job with porting for trail usage, which seems right up your alley. A forged Wiseco would be in order if you went that way.
With both of these mods, some light clutch tuning you'll be very pleased. Don't over look the importance of tires and gearing to help as well.
