I am considering getting a roller clutch from AAEN performance. I have a 96 Sportsman 400 that has a PSI pipe. I am looking from the best performance I can get. Does anyone have any input on this? I am also thinking of having the head machined to increase compression.

A roller clutch will not increase your performance, alone. It will deliver the power you currently have to the rear wheels more efficiently, when incorporated with the right springs.

I guess I should have gone into a little more detail. The kit comes with a new helix also and I would also get a stiffer spring to try. I guess what I was asking was will I notice a difference in the shifting due to less friction? Or at least will the Quad respond better?

The roller kit completely replaces the OEM secondary internals. The new helix will have 5 settings. Absolutly you will notice a difference in response, not necessarily top end or anything like that though.

Don't forget the Roller Clutch eliminates the PVT buttons that cause dust build up.

I love my roller clutch. It brings the best out of the PVT system.

Check out those High Performance Belts HPD and Aaen Performance sells. The are stronger and fade less under load.

What spring did you end up using and which hole did you end up using? I got my stock wound tight as possible with good results.

I replaced the stock rear spring with an Aaen blue spring. It has a different spring rate than the stock one. I installed it in the 2nd hole of the roller housing and the second hole in the sheave. I may change the spring position and reduce the tension to a lower setting. The Accellaration is great but the backshifting could be better. The power band is between 6000 and 7000 RPM's. From a stand still if I nail the throttle the motor can hit as high as 7200 RPM's which is slightly above the peek HP. It's cool because as the tires gain traction and the RPM's drop the engine is above 6000 for the most part. If i am moving at a moderate speed and i nail the throttle the motor usually hits between 5500 and 6000. This is a little bit lower than it should be.

I am considering changing the cam and piston so i might have to change the flyweight up front and readjust the spring load in the rear.

Having a tach is a nice option when you are tuning the PVT for maximum performance.

The Aaen roller clutch will improve acceleration and backshifting. This may or may not be what you are looking for on an Explorer 400. I removed the EBS clutches on my '99 SP500 and changed to an Aaen roller setup. I like it but am not completely satisfied with the performance yet. The engagement is too high for my taste. I like a very low engagement well below even stock rpm so that you can handle easily in the woods in extreme rough terrain. I've changed flyweights twice, and am getting there, but really need to seriously tune the clutch with a tach to find out where it's at. I have the tach and am waiting for the mounting housing to come in. The setup is with the Aaen blue spring in the 2nd hole with a 25 lb.(measured on a scale) preload. This is important or it will not work correctly.

I might suggest to do your performance changes first, depending on how far you want to go and then do the clutching last.

I have a question. Are you running a PSI pipe for any particular reason? Why not their clutch kit also? The pipe only works with proper clutching.

Raising head pressure certainly helps performance, but depends on how far you wish to go. A change in gasoline would be necessary, depending on what you decide.

The pipe that I got from PSI came with a new primary spring. They did not recomend any other changes and they do not offer another helix. I went with PSI because a friend of mine races Indy sleds and knows the owner. I am very happy with the pipe. I primarly ride on a mx track that a friend and I are building(it's good to know someone with 40 acres and has an earth moving buisness with big toys). He and his son ride CR's and are impressed that I can keep up with them.As far as the head work,I'd like to get the compression to 9-12? I belive stock is 6.5.

I am in the market for a clutch I think. I
have a 99 sportsman and I want to get more low end power. I want a true granny crawling
gear. I was just wondering if changing clutches would help I am currently running
a stock engine set up. I have added a bigfoot
kit and have noticed a loss of power when in high gear. I have to give it a lot of gas to get rolling. I want to be geared low enough to shift into low and start idleing forward.
Do I have a prayer for this any suggestions would be helpfull.
