the guy at the atv place said i could tap on the starter and it should work...
this worked for like 2 days and now it doesnt anymore..

Your solenoid is shot, or perhaps its just a loose connection at the solenoid. Check the connections carefully , if they are clean and tight and the quad wont turn over, replace the solenoid and your back in business

you need to remove your starter and replace the brush assembly, it a piece of cake once the starter is removed and costs about $45.00 the hardest part is getting the starter out.

unclematt, i just replaced the brush assembly in my xplorer 400 last week. My starter was full of mud and the brushes were completely gone. There were 2 bolts on the inside of the recoil starter that i had to remove and 2 on the back of the starter that go through a bracket to hold it in place. The starter is very easy to take apart. There are just two bolts that hold it together. When you put it back together make sure you put some rtv around all of the orings to keep the water out. Good luck.

Where is the starter on the 400? The 250 is on the bottom of the engine.

on my 2000 trailboss the starter is right up next to the cylinder head on top of the pullstarter thing buried under the airbox and behind the pipe

Weedy, the starter on my xplorer is on the bottom of the motor. Two bolts on front of starter inside recoil housing and 2 on a bracket in back of starter to hold it on.

I am helping a friend with a 300 Xploer 4x4 and I cannot seem to get it out. Did you bend the bracket a little to get it out?

I removed all 4 bolts and it still will not budge.

My 98 400 Sport is doing the same thing with the solenoid clicking. I tried to do the put the screwdriver acroos the solenoid bolts trick to try to turn the starter with no luck. I guess that means its the starter. Does anyone else have any ideas things I could try?
