scrambler or 400ex ????? what would it take...

If you want a machine just for fun trail riding, the Scrambler 500 is OK, but there is NO way it will ever keep up with a 400ex.
Now the Scrambler 400 is a lot closer. I mention this because people have mentioned both. Unless you are certain to leave it stock, go with the 400 Scrambler or 400ex. The Scrambler will not handle like the Honda, but the 400 is quite a bit lighter than the 500, and with a few mods, will keep up if not outrun the ex in a straight line. For high-speed handling, it is still no match, but keep in mind you are comparing a 2x4 to a 4x4.
Also, the address to Ritter's website is www.rittercycle.com and is a VERY good place to start. I talked to Rick a while back, and he actually talked me OUT of spending a bunch of money because there was a way to achieve the little extra performance gain I wanted without a hop-up kit (all I wanted to do was keep up with my brother on his 400 Xpress - the white spring & Uni filter was enough to do that). Just tell him what you want a Scrambler to do, and he will tell you if it can be done and at what cost.
Good luck.
PS the stories you hear about how unreliable a Polaris is are WAY overblown. Not that they don't make a bad one, but anymore, I will put them up against about anything out there.

Scrambler 400 hands down, for one your getting the performance, speed and looks of a sport quad.
But also the torque, work capabilities, and comfort of a utility quad
It don't get any better than that!!!...well sitting under the only still in production 400cc 2 stroke does'nt hurt when your blowing past your buddies 400ex 4 croak.LOL.

I totally agree, go with the Scrambler 400 4X4. All you have to do is add a pipe and clutch kit and it will be pretty fast. You can really hop up the 400. And when you go to the dunes you can put paddles on all 4 wheels and you will be able to beat anyone (well, almost, it depends on your other mods).
