i ride mostly wooded trails and some straight stretches.... i have a modded yamaha banshee and was wanting to trade it for either a scrambler or 400ex. i want the speed and handeling of the 400ex, but also would like the 4by4 and reverse capabilities of the scrambler. also i have read about the reliabilty of the polaris's. is this true. and one more thing...if i got a scrambler what would it take to be as fast (or faster) than a 400ex. THANX EVERYONE FOR HELPING ME ANSWER SOME OR ALL OF MY QUESTIONS...ALL HELP IS GrEaTlY APPRECIATED!!!!! THANX AGAIN!

My brother's SC400 has a pipe, roller clutch, 38mm carb, 12:1 cool head and porting done by RCR. Not only will it easily beat a 400ex, I've seen him outrun a stock Banshee. Total cost around $1200. Faster than a Banshee, 4x4, liquid-cooled and reverse for a little over $6000.

I would take the Scrambler. I think the 400EX is a great machine. But it is not really meant for the terrain I like to ride. Having lower ground clearance and no reverse really make it no fun to ride. I know from experience, one of the guys I ride with has one. My Trail Blazer goes more places just because of the groud clearance and reverse. I have already decided that even my Trail Blazer is pushing the limits. My next quad will definitly be a sport/utility model.
Now, if I rode different terrain, such as moderate trails, fire roads, or tracks, then I would choose the 400EX right away.

Get a 2000 Scrambler 400 4x4. It's a 2 stroke 400 cc motor. Online, people say it's fast as a 400ex. In my opinion its a very good bike. Mine has never broken down no matter the riding contions, speed, or temp.

P.S. I wanted to try out my new sig. The info is true though.

I had a 1999 Scrambler with an RCR stage 1 kit, which is a pipe, air cleaner, clutch spring, and air box mods for around $275. After that, it would beat a 400ex in a straight line.
Check it the kit out at http://www.ritterracing.com (at least I think that's the web site)
Rick at Ritter racing is a great guy, and will help you work through exactly what you want.

Good luck,

I've got a SC500 4x4 and thinking about buying a 400ex. I really like the SC500 except the weight of the machine. When we first bought the machines, it was ok. Now that we've gotten into more aggressive riding, the darn thing wears me out. It's just to heavy. So I'm thinking about the 400ex myself.
The Sc500 4x4, is the most versitly machine I've ever owned. I ride trails, ride it in the mud, jump it, race it, and plow with it in the winter. But it's just to heavy.
If your going to do alot of trail riding, where there isn't alot of rocks, the 400ex would work for you, I think. But if you ride in a area, with alot of rocks, the Sc500 is great. The ground clearence is more suitable. If your going to do alot of jumping, go 400ex. The Sc500 will handle jumping, but your going to break some chains, or aleast I have. The rest of the bike has held up, but boy am I going thru chains. And if your not careful when you land, you'll bust a button or two in your clutch, which isn't a big deal, but they will break.
So on deciding on which quad to buy? Sc500 or 400ex, it all boils down to what style of riding your going to do. If you like to play in muddy areas, Sc500 4x4 is boss. If you like to ride hard and jump, 400ex is boss. If your still on sure on which to buy. Be like me and buy your son,(if you have one) a 400ex and have the best of both worlds. But I do know one thing, whichever quad you buy, it beats not having one at all!

Sorry about the Bansheeboy2001, this might be a factor for you too think about. My son is 13, he is about 5'5" and weights about 85-90lbs. He has tried to ride my Sc500 4x4 for a long period of time. He gets tired really fast. The Sc500 wears you out, it's hard to steer, and when your going in and out of trees all day, boy it can put a hurtin on ya. The 400ex is MUST easier to steer and I think it would be easier for you. Just a thought,I think you might want to consider. Besides the Sc500 4x4 is HEAVY,compared to the 400ex.

WHAT the hell does your sig mean?????????

Oh yeah.......get the 400ex. With a lighter machine reverse isnt THAT important. Plus it is a 4 stroke, has GEARS. I would get a polaris SNOWMOBILE that is.
