Looking for some input from anyone having installed or know of what a good airfilter and maybe even a jet kit would do for a 2000 sportsman 500. I see Dennis Kirk offers a K&N powerkit with both these for $117. Is there really any bang for the bucks or should I just throw in another $14 paper filter and drive it.

I have a 2000 Scrambler 500 and just bought a K&N filter. I believe its the same filter and basic motor as the sportsman. I did not do any kind of jetting though. The filter was $30 and the cleaning kit was another $12. I noticed some power gains (I can pull a wheelie with less effort) and I accelerate a little quicker. I bought it mainly because it is cleanable/reusable. It will pay for itself in the long run.

Hope this helped!!

Don't buy the power kit just buy the filter. It is 29.99 Polaris retail. If I remember correctly the part # is 2871786. I do know it ends in 786. If you change your filter 3 times a year it already pays for itself. I run the K&N on all my toys from my Sportsman to my 13 sec. Camaro to my Ford Ranger. It has the warrenty to back it and it is one of the few filters advertised and sold through manufacturers of vehicles and quads.

Hey Swamp Donkee, if your gonna be doing alot of deep mudding and regular mudding you might consider the UNI air filter, they are foam and they are easier to clean than a K&N from what i hear anyway!!!!

Check it out!!!!

we put a k&n airfilter with the power kit also. It made the sportsman sound cool. we put the dyno jet kit in then after that some black smocked poured out the back ,but some people told me it doesn't vent well so I went out and bought some airbox vents instead of drilling holes in the airbox. I haven't installed the airbox vents yet ,but I will soon.

I have a 2000 STOCK sportman 500.
I installed the K&N filter. The sports man comes stock with a 152 jet. I went to a 162.5 main jet. I also installed the green spring from Ritter Racing. No other mods.

Reason for installing it: Mine seemed sluggish in the mud and at 60%-100% throttle.

Results: With the green spring I can almost flip the sportsman in low gear when doing a wheelie! How ever in High gear I did not see much of an improvement. I don’t know if I was expecting to much. It seems to give just a little more snap off the line. It's not jumpy or jerky. The K&N WITH a jet did make a HUGE difference. The throttle response has largely increased but its not a racing machine. I got what I wanted from the mods, more power under load. I was VERY impressed with the machines performance in thick mud and muck. It was able to keep them tires (stock) spring to the point I could let off throttle then hammer it back and it would speed them up again. The changes I chose made the machine feel lighter in the aspect of power on the low end during heavy throttle.

In conclusion I am impressed with the changes and would recommend it to people that might have experienced the same issues. I no longer lack power when I need it. The total package costs $75 and WELL WORTH IT!

P.S. I have 2 friends with the H.O. and they no longer can beat me on top end nor low end.
