Hey guys,

My bike has done this since new, and I have no clue as to what is causing it. Every time I get in deep mud, say half way up on the motor, and have the engine wound out, the engine loads up and starts sputtering and loses all power. My air box stays dry. I have the vent line off the carb routed up into the steering stem. The bike doesn't do this any other time. I've tried leaning out the main jet, but that doesn't seem to make any difference. If I keep the throttle pinned, sometimes it will come back to life for a little while, only to bog out again. I don't think it is electrical, since I can ride in deep water and not have this problem, but I could be wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Waylan

I would check to see if the belt is to loose, it should be tight when the engine is off, if you can spin the belt thru the clutches it is to loose, to tighten remove spacer washers in the secondary, I run two jet sizes down from stock and lowered the needle one clip, this is at 1,000 ft.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the belt........It only does it when my wheels go to spinning alot and I'm close to getting stuck or else I am stuck while in a deep mudhole. I wonder if the muffler being under water/mud has anything to do with it. Like maybe the extra pressure from the water trying to go in it makes the engine start loading up.

Have you guys tried putting some dialelectric grease in the spark plug boot? Make sure you have all your tubes from the crankcase routed to your headlight pod also. You should also check your muffler flange where it bolts to the head. It might not have a tight fit.

I didnt realize your were talking about water deep enough to bury the muffler, blocking the muffler opining will cause some back pressure and hinder performance, mine does the same thing and I think it because the water cools the motor down and it runs to cold. I dont have a fix, and am selling the machine because I dont use it enough.

Was that "in" the spark plug boot.I have checked the muffler flange and it was pretty used up.Going to change it .Which "tubes" are you talking about? Thanks for the help .Appreciate it.

I do not understand. You say you can drive through the same depth of water and not have a problem. When you drive through the mud is when it does it. Sounds like your clutch is not back shifting.

I have my xplorer 400 fully snorkeled and have no problems at all. I fill the spark plug boot with dialelectric grease. I ran the crankcase vent tube and the one above the transmission case to the headlight pod. I ran my vent tubes from my carberator to my headlight pod also. There is one on the front differential i also ran to the pod. It isn't necessary to snorkle the exhaust as long as you keep up the rpm's. I used some flexible 3" pipe to run to the top of my rear box. The belt drive snorkles, intake and exhaust use a 1 1/2" abs pipe. The air intake uses 2" abs. I can take it deep enough to have water come to the bottom of my headlight pod and it doesn't bog out at all. If you guys have any questions about the snorkel let me know. Then you can take your bike swimming.
