Mayhem,I have puchased two new Polaris 2-strokes over the past couple of years and they both came with a tag on the handlebars stating that the machines had been primed with Polaris synthetic gold. I guess that would mean the synthetic is ok during break in too.

Polaris stock oila and Gold are both synthewtic oils. They are fine for break-in.

Mayhem,

No synthetic in a 4-stroke in the beginning? What's this all about?

My understanding is the Sportsman 500 (4-stroke) comes from the factory with Polaris 0W40 synthetic in the crankcase.

There is also an aftermarket brand called Klotz. I've heard that it is a very good 2-stroke oil.

I remember reading at the Rec. Sport. Snowmobiles newsgroup that the Castor Bean Oils would gel in the wintertime and not have a good pour point.

Somebody else said that the Castor Oils only protected the engine if they could bond to lead molecules in leaded gasoline. (Don't know that one for a fact.)

I have heard of the Klotz Oil I think they call it Techniplate.

Let me tell you a little about the standard (non gold) Polaris oil. When I tore my top end off (to get it ported) there was almost NO wear on the cylinder walls. They did need to be honed to break the glaze and there were a few scuff marks from the piston skirt but other than that the cylinder was in great shape. As far as I'm concerned, I'll go on using it forever. It made a believer out of me!

Thor,

No I haven't. I have about 4 gallons of the original Polaris stuff I have to get rid of first before I try anything new. Thanks for the comments on my pages!
