advice on setting timing on 99 sp500
#2
Hey Slewpumper,
Straight out of the manual....here goes.
1)The ignition timing check hole is in the starter recoil/magneto housing. Remove the check plug.
NOTE: the ignition timing marks are stamped on the outside of the flywheel. Ignition timing must be inspected with the engine at room temp 68degrees.
2)With the trans in neutral, start the engine and set engine speed to 3000=/-200 rpm. (3500+/-200 for eh50PL....that's your sportsman 500)
3. Direct the timing light at the ignition timing check hole and check the ignition timing. NOTE: don't allow the engine to warm up. The timing will retard approximately 2 degrees when the engine is warm.
According to the manual, as you are looking through the hole the forward mark is 32, the middle, long mark is 30, and the aft short mark is 28. You want it at 30...the middle one.
Good Luck
KT
