Changing the starter isn't too bad as long as you realize that there are 2 hidden bolts. To get to them, you have to take the side cover off the engine where the pull-start cord comes out of.
To set the chain, weight down the rear end (or use a ratchet strap from the axle up to the frame) until the front sprocket is level with the rear. There should be about a half inch of deflection, or a little more. Too tight causes more problems than too loose.
