Scrambler X review!
#1
hey guys,
With al this hype about the new SP700 (and not without good reason!) i fiugured i'd post another good review form performance enthusiasts to read. The Scrambler X. After i borke it in, i figured it was time to do some testin. there aren't any 400EX's or raptors nearby, so i've got the fastest thing around, but i can't test it agains those i do know it will beat a 400EX in a drag tho.
ok, here we go, suspension on this thing is Awesome! 10.5 inces of rear travel, and 8.2 up from, with Gas-charged shox the whole way around really gives you one hell of a ride! not to mention that the rear spring is progressive. it has about 2 inces of soft spring, then a rubber washer connects that little one to the big one. i took it out to Bay view ORV area were there was quite a bit of mud to be found back in the back, and i've never been on a sport quad that could ride mud like this. it feels like it can do annything! it climbed some pretty steep hills without a hint at bogging down, the torque back there was really impressive. next we went to Caddilac and did Lincoln hills. this beast feels just incredible in the woops. not quite like an EX, because it is somewhat heavier, (my dealer says around 450-460) but the plush suspension makes up for it. The X doesn't get bounced around in those woops, and in the sand, still has more then enough on tap to roost and throw the front end straight up. Next i headed to the MX track acrossed the street, i only did some 5'ers but she landed every one just beutifully, thats right guys! a Polaris that can JUMP!
more little goodies: The new Clutch housing is very nice looking cosmetically and can keep out water much better then the old one. the modified HO engine performs like a real winner. the Ball-bearing steering post instead of the old bushings adds up to ZERO play, and easy turning ability, you can feel the terrain thru the bars like you're supposed to on a sport. The Ground clearence is HUGE for a sport quad, allowing passage through more then any other 2x4! The Heavy Duty break pad that come with it are REALLY winers, this thing locks all four wheels with a simple squeez and can do nose wheelies! The Front end feels really light compared to the 500 2x4 and the handling is better. It really revs fast for a fourstroke, and can pull wheelies while moving along at 30 mph (according to the Xpeditions Speedo) This thing is actually a really fun and fast (Polaris's first) machine. all in all, think after riding this thing, and fallin in love with it, i have just one thing to say... Polaris needs to make more! EVERYONE should get to experience this thing! oh, and one more thing, this is not a Sport quad, believe it or not, after riding, i can only classify it as High-performance. Polaris's first true HP quad...
well, thats all i have to say, so i'll se you guys on the trails!

I don't know why people think a scramblerX will beat a 400ex. Not that it really matters, but my dad has one and I have a 400ex. When it(400ex) was stock, we were even for the first three gears of the ex, which is about 2 seconds. When I hit 4th, I slowly but steadly pull away and on the top end I pull away as well. Don't get me wrong, I think it is the fastest polaris made(including the 400 2-stroke). I also weigh the same as mt dad. when we switch, I can get the jump on the EX, but eventually he motors on by me. It really matters who is driving the EX, or the polaris will get the jump on it. It engages(clutch) much quicker than a regular 500 scrambler and the bottom end is wicked. This is a wheelie machine. If you know how to drive it, you can wheelie to close to 40mph from a dead stop, and pick up the front end up at 30mph. I have never driven a stock polaris that will do that, and do it so easy.
Realisticly though, the EX will not leave the polaris in the dust on fire roads unless you are going wide open for a wile. There are so many varriables when drag racing. In hot temps, the ex will not do so good(air cooled) while the polaris may act similarily in cold and hot temps. if there are two 250lb riders on both machines the polaris has the hp advantage. it is already heavy compared to the ex. whats a little more? In the lower hp engines weight makes a bigger difference on them than higher hp. 2 150lb riders and the ex will rip, and the polaris won't change too much. If you don't believe me, get a 300 or 400ex, have 2 people on, and do the same with the polaris. drag race. now, drag race by yourselves. See any difference in the closeness of them? Also, how does the rider on the ex shift? ring it out and shift? short shift? shift rapidly, or just quick? it makes a difference.peak power is at around 6-7k on the ex it goes to 9100rpm. if you don't shift near the peak, the polaris has the advantage. It revs up to the peak and stays there wile the tramsmission is doing the work for you. so many varriables. anyway, something to think about. Well, whatever you drive, have fun!

Brian,
You forgot to mention the most important thing. The 400EX can be modified to go faster, the Scrambler X can't. As with all of the 500cc four stroke Polaris motors, you can't get a single extra useable horsepower out of these motors. The 400 two strokes on the other hand, are just waiting to have aftermarket stuff put on them to make some SERIOUS horsepower. This along with that silly pollution thing is what is killing off these motors. Polaris just can't stand to see one of their engines make a quad fast.
