I bought a scram 500 2x4 last year and thought I give some of my thoughts on the machine. To start with I was going to buy an ex400 but decided against it due to the ground clearance. Since I live in Illinois most of my riding is in areas where there are no trails, we make our own trails. In the beginning I wasn't to happy about the weight of the machine. However, after riding the machine for a year now I'm comfortable with the machine. This not the fastest quad, but can this thing hill climb. Most of the time I'm gaining speed up hills. I'm happy with the suspension, even though there was some shock fading after some hard riding. The engine has the ticking sound that everyone else has talked about. I probably have 1000 miles on this machine without a single mechanical problem. I have had problems with the belt getting wet when I hit water holes at high rate of speed. At low speeds I can go through some deep water as long as I can make traction. In the beginning I missed not being able to shift the trans, however after riding trails in Black River Falls all day, it was nice to just hit the throttle and go. I think it made riding 100 miles a day a lot easier. For the type of riding I do this quad if perfect for me.

ditchbuster,
To help with the water hole problem spend $17 and buy the 2002 clutch outlet duct. It is made with a different opening and will retro fit onto yours.

uflg95...I am glad to hear about the clutch outlet duct... is this pretty easy to put on. I will be looking into this. I ride in alot of river bottoms, this would be great to help keep the water out. Thanks

Very simple to change and worth every penny. I have sold several of these for that reason. For instance look how the opening is pointed on yours, then look at an 02.
