One of my friends just got a used sport 400. It is purple and yellow and its rims are white. He claims it is a 1999 model but i do not believe him. what model is this?

Your right, its not a 1999. It would either be a 1997 or 1998. The 1996 model was yellow and purple but had silver rims. Both the 1997 and 1998 model were purple and yellow with white rims. The 1999 model was yellow and red.

Unless, of coarse; the plastic has been changed. Where is the rear brake located?

Plastics can always be changed. More then likely it is a 98 or older. Is the rear brake on the axle or off the CS?

'99 and newer has a different style swingarm which is the easiest way to tell. That is the year the rear brake system was changed and placed on the axle.

See if has concentric drive. The 98's and older don't, but I believe that the 99 does.
