Scrambler 400 Help!!!
#1
I'm thinking about getting one of the new 2002 400X 4x4's. What would it take to outrun a stock 400ex with a stock 400 4x4 scrambler? And also how much power do the automatic's have, will they pop a wheelie? Please help me and tell me if there are any poblems on the 400X or the normal 400 4x4 scramblers.

yes it will wheelie i can wheelie mine until i run out of room so i think you will be happy on that part
as far as out running a 400ex?dont know ive never ran one but... i dont think it would take much work to the 400sram probably a pipe and clutch kit that is in a drag race .dont even think about out running a 400ex on the trails or mx track with the scrambler it want happen.

I raced my friends piped Suzuki LT250 w/ my stock 98 400 Scrambler & got smoked badly. After $300 w/ HPD pipe/clutch & Ritter modified air box, I smoked him until he hit 6th gear. Thats a very big difference in preformance w/ such a cheap & easy mod. Now I have since added the 39mm carb, reeds, 12:1 cool head & trail porting & am tied w/ my other friend slightly modified Banshee until his 6th gear twice & beat my other friend DS650 twice. If I had to do it all over again, I think immediatly after installing the basic pipe mod I would have went directly into improving the handling. You dont need high HP to fast on trial or even on an MX track, look at the low powered 400 EX for instance, but you definately need handling/cornering improvements. The stock handling is what limited me not the lack of HP. I reduced 60lbs, lowered over an inch, widened w/ spacers to almost 50" & did the Works/Pep front/rear which was only $500 which is really cheap for suspension I think for what you get. Good luck.

When my Scrambler was new I went to Silver Lake and raced 2 different 400EX's. All three were stock and almost exactly even. Neck and neck up to about 55 MPH or so.
To beat one just order a matched Pipe/Clutch kit/Jet kit/Silencer ($500) from either HPD or HotSeat. Then the 400EX will be blown away, with sheer acceleration. On smooth type fire roads or the dunes he will still be blown away. The Honda will handle the slow, tech. tight trails way better, but if you are not going to do that kind of rideing the 400EX will be much slower.

The 400ex is faster then a Scrambler. I own a 400ex and a friend of mine has a 1999 Scrambler 400. We have raced several times and I have beaten him every time. My 400ex is modified now, but when it was stock, I still took the Scrambler all day long. On the start we were neck and neck. But by the time I hit third gear on my 400ex I would pull away from him and take off leaving him about 4 or 5 quad lengths behind. The Scrambler is too heavy and in my opinion, doesn't even compare with the 400ex.

mod or not mod, I'll still take you 400 sport. I've done it before, I'll do it again any time, any day.

i don't want to change your mind here but,if you're into that kind of
aggressive riding to race other quad, the 2x4 scrambler will be the one to go.the 2x4 have faster tranny gear ratio and over 55 lbs lighter than the 4x4 so better handling as well, more cornering.stock for stock
there will be not much on top speed over the honda, maybe 3-4 mph.
i'm sure you'll buy mods after your first ride...
