Can I still ride with a torn boot
#2
Boots are fairly easy to replace, shouldn't take more than a half hour-45 minutes at most. Probably around $20 for the boot kit. The funny thing is, a Yamaha dealer said that with atv's, you can ride with a torn cv boot through all terrain for short periods of time-like a day or two if need be and not worry about doing any damage. I thought this sounded pretty strange myself-either he was trying to persuade someone to do this, hoping it would cause damage and he could sell a cv kit, or he was telling the truth, it's hard to say. At any rate, will you be riding in very much mud and water? GrizRick tore a front cv boot on our last ride in very dusty, rocky conditions, had grease spewing everywhere. We took a ziploc gallon freezer bag, cut it down both sides, then wrapped that around the boot and axle itself, then used some waterproof first aid tape I had in my bag to tape it up good. It was crude, but you know what-it worked! We rode probably close to 50 miles after the fix using that ziploc bag trick and it worked great-didn't have a single problem at all, ever. Granted, he did get a new boot when he got home, but we were in some pretty rough terrain that required a lot of winching as well for both of us, the boot and cv did fine. I don't know that I would recommend driving in a ton of water with this fix, but it might work OK for small crossings and such till you can take the time to get a new boot.
If it's a small tear and you still have most of the grease, you can probably get away doing something similar to still allow you to ride, but I would get it changed as soon as possible after that. If the tear his big and most of the grease is gone-I think I'd be on the safe side and just replace it before you go.
Best of Luck,
Mike

500DUSE,
Don't even consider riding 'till you fix it, your local dealer should stock the boots and it is an easy fix!
BTW, where in NJ are you ?
