Does anyone know what kind of oil I could use in the transmission of a Sportsman 500? Other than the Polaris stuff?
Has anyone used a different oil in their transmission?
Thanks.

Mobil 1 synthetic 85-90w.
I was thinking of using 0W-40 AmsOil Formula 4-Stroke Synthetic Motor Oil.
Heres what it says about this oil: Use in Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Mercury, Kawasaki, Arctic Cat, Polaris, Nissan and Bombardier motors and transmissions. Safe in wet or dry sumps. Recommended for manual or
automatic clutches.

The AMSOIL 0w-40 is to be used where the manufacturer specs call for a 0w-40, 5w-30, or a 10w-30 to be used. If you use AMSOIL use the 75w-90. The reason for "Use in Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Mercury, Kawasaki, Arctic Cat, Polaris, Nissan and Bombardier motors and transmissions. Safe in wet or dry sumps. The Polaris tranny is a gearcase which is very similar to a chaincase and the 0w-40 would not cut it in that enviroment.
uflg,
I appreciate the reply.
Theres no way the Polaris transmission oil is 75w-90. The Polaris oil seems awfully light, like 5w-30 or 0w-30. The Polaris stuff pours like water. Thats why I was guessing the 0w-40 would work.
Have you used 75w-90 in your transmission? I use my Polaris quite a bit in winter time, so that seems awfully thick.
Is there an oil better than AmsOil? The reason why I picked AmsOil was because a friend told me AmsOil is one of the best.
Thanks.

Actually I never have used it in the tranny but I am going to switch to an AMSOIL product myself. I am slowly switching everything I own to it. I am a firm believer in the AMSOIL product. I am a dealer personnally and we are a dealer at the shop I work at. I will see if I can find out tommorrow and then we will both know for sure. I honestly have no doubt the 0w-40 AMSOIL would hold up it is I just believe it is too light for proper protection.
Disregard the above statement:
You got me curious so I just ran out to my truck and got my dealer binder and info and found AMSOIL recommends their Series 2000 Synthetic Chaincase Lubricant for all enclosed chain drives. AMSOIL part #TCC-BE (12 oz. bottle).

Polaris synthetic gearcase oil is a high viscosity gear oil. It pours like water because it is a synthetic. Pour some Amsoil or Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil and you'll see how thin it is also. I've used Polaris synthetic since day one on my modified machine with no failures. My buddy has used Mobil 1 in his Nitrous powered 400 for three years now with no problems. Most oils today are more than enough for the jobs they do. You have to drop the old thinking of thicker is better.
uflg,
What AMSOIL are you going to use in your SP500 transmission?
I've seen the Series 2000 Synthetic Chaincase Lubricant before, is it good enough for a SP500 transmission?
I have 4200 miles on my SP500, using all Polaris Oils ans Greases. I've had no troubles. However, I'm tearing my 500 down, checking everything and replacing what needs to be replaced. Now I'm going to switch to AMSOIL for everything, including my ATC's.
The only AMSOIL product I don't like is their 2-Stroke Oil, I don't know why, I just don't like it. I use Motul for my 2-Stroke needs.

Have to agree with Fasterthangas. I've used the Polaris syn. since day one also. Just change it at least annually. One tip that's worked for me though, Mobil 1 in the front and rear diffs of the truck. Actually reduced 70mph cruise by 150rpm+. Check your application in case you need limited slip or other additives...check with your dealer. Also Mobil 1 in the lower unit of the outboard +1mph on the gps, not much, but everything helps.
