i ran a 650 k wacker with my 96 stock 400 xplorer and got a 1/2 a quad length on him out of the hole and held there till 60 MPH. the 650 had a big wheel kit tires that may have slowed it down. not bad for a 96 with 3000 miles with same belt and plug.

there were 2 of us on 400 Xplorers and we both ran with the 650 and both are stock. in motocross racing they let the 400 cc 4 strokes run against the 250cc 2 strokes because they are about equal in hp. both 400 xs run 60 mph on a level hard dirt roads.

I've had many friends that have had 400 Xplorers. They all ran over 60mph. I know because I had a stock 300 Xpress that only did about 52mph and I couldn't keep up to them on the dirt roads. It wasn't even close. They pulled away from me pretty fast. A few of these friends went to 500SP and they even said that their old 400 Xplorers were a faster machine. They just wanted a four stroke and IRS. They said "the 400 Xplorer would take them after about 10 feet and just walk away from them clear up to the top end and still keep going". They would like to have that kind of stock performance out of their 500SP. Love the IRS too much though.
