my sportsman that i suped up this spring and have only put about 4-500 mls on since, has eaten the cam. one mechanic at my dealer told me that polaris has a lot of probs with soft cams. the other mechanic made a bunch of excuses that i must of done something to it,
i'm no fool (other than buying this piece of crap), there is nothing i could do to this bike to wear out both intake lobes and ruin the rocker arms and not even touch the exhaust lobe, and yes the rocker arms were in perfect shape when i installed the cam.

so my question is do you think that my dealer will, should, or can do anything to help me with this cam that was obiusly defective.
i have asked them about it and they keep telling me that polaris hasnt got back to them yet.
i feel they should at the very least give me a new cam and rocker arms
i have spent most of my spare time trying to make this bike run right only to end up at the very part that was the reason that i did the rebuild , yet another wore out cam
if any one should know what the dealer should or shouldn't be able to do
you sould
thanks for the help

That is a tough one. Do not get offended with these questions, this is how Polaris will look at it.

Did you install the cam yourself or did your dealer? If your dealer installed it I believe they would easily stand behind it. If you did there is a problem for you, I do not think they will.

How well do you know your dealer? There is a warrenty on parts over the counter. Will they help you in stating they put it in (if you did)?

Your dealer on the other hand should go to bat for you. I do know however and Elroy you should be the same, our MSD tech always has the answer (yes or no on warrenty) before he hangs the phone up. Now to his advantage he knows almost all the Polaris techs by name and visa versa. Do not however expect too much from your dealer, they can get in some pretty good trouble if they bend the truth for you and get caught.

It is strange that the intake lobes went, I have never seen or heard of that. What usually happens is (this is our MSD's theory with factual evidence) the decompression ball taps the hardface on the exhaust rocker. This causes the hard face to eventually chip and wear which inturn starts to take the exhaust lobe off. The reason we believe this is when we have ported we have noted the mileage and the wear on the rocker and it has definitely created a pattern. The only thing we can not figure out is why the 425 doesn't do it. The 425 has the same cam as the non-HO sportsmans but does not have the same problem.

To get back to the subject, I can't give you a exact opinion on how Polaris will handle that.

thanks ulfg95
you the man
unfortunatly my dealer doesn't share in your helpfulness
i have bought for this bike alone around 1000$ worth of parts, i just got to accept that they are a cant be bothered dealer.they still never called me back today. so im done with them, ordered about 400$ worth of parts from another dealer that told me they would warrenty any of my defective parts at just about any time. what pisses me off is that they acussed me of doing something wrong and that it was my falt. then they didn't even put any effort into helping me out. even if they had tried i would have understood if they couldn't.
so i voted with my feet, there loss
this is an old story with this dealer, this is the last chapter for me.
thanks for the help
when this is all done i will let you know how it works with a good cam in it
maybe now i can get my heelclickers set up now that my bike will be making some power

Your welcome Scott,
We are by no means a perfect dealer either but we won't give you a bull$#!t story. We help when we can but we are truthful (as far as the service, sales, and parts guys are concerned anyway). We've ticked some people off but for 98.9% of the time I have returning customers just because I tried. Hey I notice you have a 2002 Viper on order, have you got it yet? I know of 2 guys who have tried theirs out at grass drags and wish it was a bit faster. Otherwise from what they can tell it's pretty awesome.
