If it were me I would get the 400, but it could be different for a lot of people.
In stock form the 400 and the 500 are about even. However, you have to ask yourself one big question...Am I happy with the performance, or am I going to want to mod it?
If you do want to make it faster with mods then you are best to get the 400. You get the most bang for your buck with 2 strokes. However, if you aren't going to mod it at all then there are still questions, but not really any answers. 4-strokes tend to be more reliable than a 2-stroke. BUT, if the 4-strokes do break then they cost a lot more. You could have a 2 stroke and go for 3 years without a problem, and you could have a 4 stroke and go 3 weeks without a problem and then have something let go. You never now.
Sure, odds are the 4 stroke will outlast the 2 stroke, but there is always the exception and maybe you could be it .
I'm sure I left somethings out, but it's time to go home...it's been a long day at work.
Take care and good luck.

They're both nice machines but the 400 can be made to go fast. I was sitting by the dragstrip a couple of weeks ago watching my friend racing his Husquavarna 400 and a guy with a Scrambler 500 asked me if I wanted to race him. I smoked him bad, but his 500 was probably stock I'm guessing. It's hard to buy a 400 and keep it stock after you see what they can do with a few mods.
