Default Scrambler problems?

My 400cc motor is a 2 stroke not found in the utility models. There was a couple years that they did put the 400 cc 2 stroke in the explorer but it wasn't exactly the same either. Around the house I use a VERY small LT160 kid quad to pull a cart loaded down w/ fire wood, haul bricks, rock etc, county living yard work. The point is, you can't believe how much work I get out of this little quad so if you were to get anything bigger than that & the 450 certainly is, you can do a lot of work w/ it. So I think it would be fine. We also had a little LT250 quadrunner years ago. I modifed the snow plow & w/ the diff lock, it worked like a bull dozer, I pushed & spread about 70 ton of dirt before I bought a Case 580 backhoe & New Holland TC29 tractors. Anyway, you don't need a lot of machine to do a lot of yard work.

Default Scrambler problems?

I have a 2003 trailblazer 400 so far the only major thing that got busted was the brake caliper carrier/ bracket because I was towing a jetski trailer,it slipped off the grab bar,tie down came loose an it hit back of quad moving it.I heard the pistons were aproblem but so far mine has held up.Mine now has a dg pipe an exhuast an a flatslide 42 w a kn air cleaner an it rips. The next mods Id like to make is reeds, the pro design head, clutch kit an piston..every friend I let ride it tells me its unreal an insanely fast, runs like a retarded ape 1 freind said.it just dont handle too good for the speed its producing.i gotta find a way to lower it or take some weight off or both,I stuck it in a corner on a trail straightaway an it wouldnt turn that thing wanted to go straight lol.I rather have the 2 smoke over the 4 stroke but the 4 stroke probably is more reliable an less maintanence in long run.just not as much hop up potential. good luck either bike is good as long as you take care of it.

Default Scrambler problems?

Hi there, looking for problems, well read on. I have a 95 Scrambler 400 and the list of problems grows by the day. I just bought it (for cheap the engine was siezed) and tore it down. The counter balance bearings failed sending chrapnel throughout the whole case, trashing the counter balance ($600 Canadian), the timing gears (150 used Can.) and the oil pump ($240 Can.). Looking deeper I found that the clutches need rebuilding and one of the tie rod ends is collapsed (never seen anything like it before). The rest of te engine is getting all new parts and the head and cylinder are probably going to RCR for machining. Don't let this scare you as I am not positive on the history of the machine, but keep in mind that things will break and from what I've found, Polaris parts are very expensive. Still I am not afraid to spend a thousand dollars making it go again.

i love my 400, i just pulled a H1 650 AC out of a long mud hole! Smoked the belt, but it got us all home. I love the 2-stroke, auto and power, i do change brakes alot due to the large tires.

Sugarhead, you mention the handling of the 400 not being able to keep up w/ the engine. I couldn't agree w/ you more. After PEP rebuilt the rear shock & I put on the Work air adjustable front struts w/ spacers on the wheels w/ small Kenda tires, this thing finally handles really, really well. Very stable at high speed offcamber corners & through the really rough stuff at high speed the rear end doesn't want to swap like it used to. Plus dropping the 50lbs of weight helped also.
Eli98, I think it was like in 98 that they redsigned the 400 & eliminated the front drive chain & added the longer front stuts as well as other changes. My friend has the older 400 Scrambler, white w/ black seat like 95 or 96 & had a lot of problems that I never had, not saying all are like that but I remember reading about more problems w/ the older machines.

The funny thing is for such a big quad its jumps really well.Back in june I took it down to the NJNORVP riding area,I went on the Mx track roosting around,Whoo man was it hairy just pure mayhem,I reeled in an passed warriors an 400exs,I couldnt take the predators or 450s due to there superior handling traits.it was funny coming off the track an just getting stares like what the hell is that thing an who is that person riding that thing around like that.PRICELESS

I know Im beating a dead horse but I wish the mfgs didnt have to get rid of the 2 smoke engine.the 1 dealership,Honda it was told me alot of people still love and or buying the 2stroke cause its easier to start work on an when they need a rebuild waayy cheaper. The companies dont care 4 strokes === moe money into mfgs pockets, the ecos dont care, they could kill all off road stuff for all I care or feel. But there is advantages an people dont see this side of the coin.
