we must remember that the 700 engine is WAY detuned. it is about 48hp stock and is capapable of ALOT more. it could also me made to 780cc with a 10mm longer stroke. A "insider" over at highlifter said the 780cc twin can make 90hp, try that with the kawie 650 or grizz 660.

ledebuhr1,

True, the sp700 is said to be very detuned, but I believe the same about the prarie 650 as well, and possibly the grizz 660. Just a pipe on the raptor (similar head and cyl) increases the hp like on a 2-stroke....from a recent article. For the same money put into either the 700 or the 650, I believe more performance gains would be seen with the 650. Even though I would prefer the 700 over the 650 (for reasons other than the engine), the 650 is a much more technologically-advanced designed engine, which should be capable of large hp gains. 2 valves per cylinder on the 700 are a limiting factor versus 4 per cylinder on the 650. The sad thing about both the 700 and the 650 is that they are like the banshee.......2 of everything required to increase power (with the exception of one carb on the 700). Don't get me wrong......I'm not bashing the 700, just calling it how I see it.

Just to add a little fuel to the fire, this past Saturday we drag raced side by side on asphalt the SP700,KAW650 and the 660 Griz for appx. 1/4 mile. Both riders on the SP700 and the 660 Griz weigh appx. 180 and the rider on the KAW650 appx.155. The SP700 was first out of the hole followed by the KAW650 then the 660 Griz. The SP700 continued to pull away and won by appx.20 yards and the 660 Griz back appx. another 10 yards. So much for the Dirt Wheels test. Of course there is unvariably a power difference between bikes of the same manufacturer.

I just picked up my new 700 last night. WOW. I think I made the right decision. Anyway, one more reason for the Polaris, it's made in America. The profits stay here. It keeps our people working. Have some pride...buy American.

Great price!
i bought my stuff @ Smith's in huntington. i haven't shoped price yet 'cause i haven't sold my 500.
i did visit Enfield last weekend (Sat) for the first time. that place was PACKED with customers. lots of sleds, only one polaris remmington parked at the door. there was a line of people waiting for the sales guy, he looked like the only sales person there-a really heavy set guy, so i just took a brochure and left. if you can recommend a sales person, let me know.
thank-you,
MT

Just got a 700, it is an awesome ride. I saw a 650 spank a Grizzly 660 in a mud bog, Yamaha isn't even waterproofed at all! Head service tech where I got my 700 has a 500 HO, is trading it for a 700. Anyway he rode a 650 Prairie and a 700 for hours on a long trail ride (switching off) and says the Kawasaki doesn't even compare when it comes to the ride. I don't dislike the Prairie, but the 700 is taller with better ground clearance, comes with rims and tires that would cost you $800 to put on the Prairie, and is just better suited to mud (which is where I always end up. I drove everything before I bought my first Polaris, and they definitely have the best ride. I now have the 700 and a 98 Scrambler 500 4x4.
I did have some problems with the 700, though. blew crank seal first time I started it. Dealer put in a new one and it blew too. Polaris told them it was the 3rd machine they heard of, and told them how to fix it. Apparently was a minor block casting problem. Anyway, buy a 700 and enjoy the superior ride and traction. Or, buy a Prairie and spend money for real tires.
