I am planning on sending my flywheel into Rick to get lightend and was wondering if you guys think it's worth the money ?? Will I notice any differance and if so when and where ?? I will be keeping the electric start..
Also for you T.B. guys what size jet are you using with your pipe.I put a 170 in and it took off like a rocket didn't even need to move the needle...I just can't believe what a differance my mods have made..Anyone using a bigger jet??

adding weight to the fly wheel helped the lowend of my friends 88 250R so i would say having a fly wheel lightend would help topend

Not exactly. Here's the math:

Flywheel = rotating mass
1LB rotating mass = 7LBS unsprung weight
Rotating mass = sluggish throttle
Shaved flywheel = less rotating mass
Less rotating mass = quicker throttle response

If you're going to keep the electric start then I would have to say its not worth the money.

KevinM,

Do you speak from experience or know of one that was done for someone else? Or are you just stating your unexperienced opinion?

I too, am thinking about having this done. I would like to see my engine rev a little quicker off an idle. I have a high engagement point and it seems to take to long for my engine to hit it from an idle. I don't want to eliminate my electric starter but I am looking for all that I can do to give it a fatser responding rev.

I had it done to my 500 and my brother had it done to his 400. No noticeable improvement, not to say that it didn't help, but I could have spent the money on something better. If you have the money to spend you'd be better off letting Rick Ritter do some trail porting for you. You just can't take enough weight off the flywheel if you keep the electric start.

Lightening the flywheel has nothing to do with weight savings and everything to do with engine throttle responsivness vs. torque curve. I guarantee that Ritter doesn't take a pound out of the flywheel....he takes enough that, in his experience, won't harm reliablility but will improve low speed throttle response. Has nothing to do with the starter.

If you go with what most call race shave you wont be able to use the starter.

Gotcha...so part of the rotating weight savings involve removing the "ring gear". I was under the impression you could machine the rear of the flywheel out and retain the elec. starter.....not that it matters since I don't have one....LOL!

PS: anyone who wants to get rid of a Pol 400 starter, let me know. (I've posted this before....just trying again)

I asked Mike at HPD. He told me that unless you remove the starter
they could not remove enough materal from the fly wheel to make a
big difference!
