Strut housings?
#1
Has anyone ever seen a Polaris with polished strut housings? I am in the middle of painting my frame and was going to give my strut housings that brushed/polished look. I have never seen anything done like that before. I have started on one so far but, man that is alot of work.
I decided on the silver/blue metallic. I have my swing arm done. I think it looks really cool, so does one of the mechanics.
I decided to do this at work since we were a little slow. Well, as soon as I got it stripped down we got really busy again. Now I don't get alot of time to work on it. I am slowly making some progress but I wish I could get this thing done. I want to do some riding.

I thought of doing the same with my Sport when I tear it down this next winter. I think it would look sweet but be a pile of work. As rough as those are I know it would seem to take forever. If I ever get the chance when I'm over that direction I will stop and see what it looks like. Good Luck.

riderrideshard,
I doubt it. I have to leave tuesday for a while so I won't even be there all day as it is. I had to install a winch on saturday so I didn't get hardly any time to work on it then either. I'm still waiting for my 30 tooth sprocket before I can finish the axle and I need to touch up my rear hubs. This definately turned out alot more involved than I first thought. I figured it would anyway, I'm always really picky when I do the work, ecspecially to my own. Did you see my old pictures at the bottom of my signature?

sevy,
Cool, do you have any pictures I could see? I won't really know how it looks until its done and all together. I'd like to see someone else's before i do all this work.

I have a lot of parts polished on my ZX11 and it is a lot of work keeping it shining. The frame was rough cast and it was a real pain to get the cast smoothed out.I even used a DA sander cause it is fairly flat.I refuse to drive it in the rain and the aluminum still gets tarnished fairly quickly. I am very **** about my bikes cleanliness.I think on an ATV polishing is a waste of time unless you're going to run it in the dry sand only. The aluminum will never stay shiny unless you polish it constantly. You might want to try some powdercoating instead.I just bought a kit from Eastwood Co. and it is very easy to do. I just did my front rims today with their "almost chrome" powder coat and it looks as shiny as polished aluminum and it is supposed to be 10 times more durable than standard paint too. All you need is to have the part stripped to the bare metal and apply the powder with the gun. Then it gets baked in a dedicated oven for 20 min at 400 deg.Whan the part cools it is ready for reassembly.I've got a lot of parts I'm going to powdercoat.

How about Chrome plating them so there's not so much work in keeping them clean. I have had a lotta parts on my car chrome plated and also did my aluminum valve covers because it was just to hard to keep them polished all the time. If you do polish the strut housings you might also look into having them clear coated...know a few people that do that to aluminum so they don't have to polish it all the time.

elroy,
If i was smart i would have taken some picks but i didn't. Now they are all mud and dirt, but they are alot better to clean now that the dirt doesn't get in the small pit holes. You still will have to put alot of elbow grease in keeping them pretty. I some what gave up on it, it's too much work to destroy all the labor in seconds.
