Another question for Elroy

I was just courios if you have your bike finished yet? Have you had a chance to try it out with the new carb and pipe yet?How hard was it for you to mount the TMX carb on your bike? Can the existing throttle cable be used? Also what did you use for the intake and airbox boots?
I am thinking of getting a TMX for my bike too because I cant get this VM34 jetted right. I think I've got it right and when it gets hot it starts leaning out again.Trust me I have tried EVERYTHING!!!
I just got done reinstalling my engine after a complete teardown. New crank bearings & seals, .040 Wiseco piston,More portwork, Trued and welded crank, rechambered and shaved head. And it still leans out after a while at 1/8 throttle and will start detonating!!!I even tried it without the UFO and it still does it. It is rich at idle but after I run it for a bit it will start to smooth right out as it leans out and then it starts detonating.I even have a different needle in it and it is still doing it.

I already posted to you in your other question.
This is whats all done on my machine, the frame and swing arm and a-arms are painted, engine and transmission(also had to fix the reverse) and mounted, carb is mounted(using the stock intake boot), air box is now mounted(using a 2.25" hose),handle bars steering stem and tie rods are all hooked up, front calipers are bolted on(after being polished),wheels are cleaned and mounted with a set of 489XT's, wiring is hooked up(not finished), axle carrier is cleaned and installed, new sprockets and chain, RCR pipe is mounted,... that is about all I can think of now.
Yes, the stock cable works with the TM carb. All I had to do was file the end of the cable just a little bit to fit into the slide. I wanted to continue to run the oil injection so I had to drill the TM carb to fit the oil injection line. Outside of that it was a "bolt on".
I haven't been able to run it really. I had it running before but after I went down in some jet sizes and installed my air box, I haven't been able to get it running again. It just fouls the plug. The carb comes with a 280main/50pilot. It would run with these in it without the airbox. I went down to a 230/40 and it would still start but needed the choke. I then put the air box on and dropped again to a 220/30. Now it just fouls the plugs and never even tries to fire. After seeing this yesterday I got discouraged and left. I'll work at it some more in the next couple of days.

I wouldn't mind the jetting changes if I didn't have to remove the carb everytime to do so. That is the real pain in the a$$. The thought of having to remove my carb again is what made me hang it up for the day, yesterday.
I'll have drop my pilot down to a 20 to see if it will start with the air box. The problem is that I don't know if I even have a 20. I'd hate to drive all the way to work(45 minutes one way) to find out I don't even have a 20.

You might want to try and give Sudco Dist. a call. They custom jet these carbs for the different application before they sell them. They might be able to give you some baseline jetting to start from.A 20 pilot seems awfully small to me. Also you may have to try different needles to get the fuel curve you want.
I guess I've been pretty lucky because my bike ran pretty good when I first put the bigger carb on it.I had to start changing the jets only when I did more mods to the bike and added the UFO.I am going to try and open the silencer up some too.I think it may be the root of my jetting and lean 1/8 throttle problems. The baffle is only about 1" in diameter and the outlet is only about 7/8" in diameter. This is a lot smaller than the 1 1/4 outlet of the pipe.I think the restriction may be causing some of the detonation because the heat is staying inside the cylinder and not exiting into the pipe the way it is supposed to.This extra heat could be causing the bike to want more fuel at the 1/8 position too.It works great until I drive the bike for about 10 mins. then the problem comes back.
Also if there is too much restriction it can impair the ex. flow and this can lower the draw of fuel in the carb.
It all sounds good on paper. I'll know for sure tomorrow after I modify the silencer with a bigger baffle and endcap.I think I'll use the same 1 1/4 straight through.
