How many carry a gun while riding?

Hey Rick,
Have you ever been shot in the head with a bullet proof vest on?? Me neither but I don't guess the vest would help much. How about shot in the thigh when your 60 miles fron the nearest road, same ultimate effect as the head shot I suppose.
To me it seems like a good idea to carry a gun when your out in the boonies. Someone else mentioned the 2 guys that were murdered here in Utah on a hunting trip, there are some weirdos out there. How about the county worker that was in a grader maintaing a dirt rode out in the middle of nowhere when some nut decide he wanted to be a sniper and killed him for no reason. I worry more about people more than the critters etc. Besides, you know that if you plan on shooting a bear (or a moose) with a handgun you should file the front sight off first? That way it doesn't snag when your pulling it out after the bear has shoved it up your a$$.
Maybe we still have the "out west" mentality out here but I seems like a part of being prepared. Like others have said we pack around first aid kits, extra parts, shovels, patch kits, etc. with the hope that we won't need them.

My scope mount required the removal of both front and rear sights, so no snagging for me Besides, 6 reloaded rounds of 200-grain XTP hollow points in .44 magnum oughta slow somethin' down enough for me to get away

Hey Chainman ,
I do carry a pistol while out in the boonies .(a dinky little 22) I carry it unloaded , five clips in my pocket or tool box ,Barney Fife style. But , I bring it allong to SHOOT it at targets and what not . Like I said , if I was worried about getting shot by someone , I would prefer a bullet proof vest . I would think the risk of carrying a gun allong in the woods and shootings ones self accidentally would be a higher statistical risk than being attacked by Jesse James and his crew.
I keep trying to visualize how a gun is going to do me a lot of good if someone wants to shoot me in the woods . I mean , they are gonna aim ,and fire . Then poor ole Rick Ritter is gonna drop . And even if they warn me first , I still have a 50/50 chance of getting shot using simple math .
I have never been in bear country , but I do believe if I was, a large caliber firearm would be a good thing to have allong , but if the darn things jump out of the woods and you must draw and fire , I think I'll just stay indoors and invite the lady next door over to play cards or something .
Guys , I have lots of guns ,re-loading equipment and what not . I have made firing pins and various gun parts for my own amusement .I enjoy firearms . I just find it a stretch for myself personally to think of finding a likely scenario where I am going to save myself with one of them .
I have a heck of an alarm system on my shop . When it goes off at 2 AM (which it has, dang mice) I don't rush to the gun safe. I throw all the lights on and peer out the window . I then warm a cup of coffee and let Mr. Thief if he is there find his way back to his car in a lighted pathway . I am not foolish enough to go out and confront someone . That is a good way to get hurt. Shooting him would land me in lots of trouble and I am sure , at least a big lawyer bill .
If , someone broke in my home , and my family and I were threatened I would surely have to do something , but honestly , I would be a a big disadvantage . Chances of me being able to fend him off would be quite slim . And , what if the intruder is one of my boys slipping in the house after being out to late with his friends? Thieves rarely want to come into a home when poeple are their asleep . Someone creeping around my house late at night are most likely going to be my family members. And if it isn't , what am I really going do anyway if the intruder wants to get me? I am asleep .
So , this my take on all of this , take it for what it is worth .
