After reading the last three pages, I shames me to see that we are all afraid of the same things in the woods. Meth-labs, pot fields and stills. Though i have never come up on a still. I have spotted a pot field while out riding. Most of where I ride is in the Meth capitol of the country. Peirce County, Washington. The pot fields dont scare me much because there is usually nobody around. But I sure would hate to ride up on a bunch of hoods cookin up a batch of meth.

newfiebullet- as far as wildlife goes, you are right I am on a quad most things would run. But say you stop or break down. Have you ever been face to face with a mountain lion? Cat attacks are on the rise in our state because the amimal rights wacos managed to ban hunting with hounds, baiting for bears, and traps. I would hate to be walking out and not be able to fend off a cat or a black bear defending her cubs. You would never know I was packing a gun unless I showed you. (well the raging bull is a little hard to hide)

dcroc- yes I have, and yes it cracked two ribs and left a bruse the size of a small pizza. And it ruined the vest.

Maybe that's the difference. The last thing I would worry about would be coming across a Meth lab, and I don't think many people around here would even know what you were talking about.

If I lived in a big city and I was going for a walk in some seedy area, I might like to have a gun.
Out riding in the woods? If I was going hunting, of course, but the thought would never cross my mind other wise. Your chance of being mugged or shot when you're riding quad around here would be about
0.000000000001% (rough guess)
Freedom (from paranoia) sure is sweet.

I too live in deliverance country. And like Soggyrider, I agree there is always the chance of happenning onto a pot field or meth lab. If I'm just messing around, I might have a stainless single six ruger with me, but if I actually load up and go ride somewhere, I've always got either my .357 smith or my Beretta 92F on me.

A gun is like insurance, better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

If you live in a safe suburb then I guess you wouldn't even think about a gun & it's very foreign to you. Most people are good, helpful & wonderful but 1% of the population makes up for all that good w/ pure evil & may God help you when you encounter them. If the men out there riding w/ they're families aren't worried about defending they're families then that's up to them but I feel sorry for their families if something would happen. My family knows I would do what ever to protect them, period, so we go anywhere, anytime, it doesn't matter, armed & no fear. My dad's family is from the back woods of WV & Ohio & most of my cousins are white trash & I guess I would be also if not for my dad working his way out of that environment into a VERY successful engineering position. I am also a successful degreed engineer. You can't pick your family & some of mine are in prison & I know of many very bad stories of what relatives & friends of relative said they did or witnessed which I cant comment on. It's what movies are made out of. My dad has a warrant out for the arrest of our own cousin for an incident in the backwoods of Pa & years ago even robbed his own mother, my aunt. One friend of the family, Rudy was found at his camp near Roulette Pa, w/ an ax in his forehead & shot twice. I knew him all my life. The white trash that killed him drove his stolen truck for a couple weeks, spending his credit cards until the state police caught up w/ him. Image your family there instead of poor old Rudy. Another friend, Jr came back to his trailer w/ his wife from getting groceries to find it being robbed. Jr is a very tough wild man so he attacked him & beat the crap out of him before he asked any questions & didn't worry if the robber was armed or not. You don't mess w/ Jr. Anyway, his wife held him a gun point & the state police said the robber was out on parole & was targeting these out of the way places also in rural Pa. Near Tionesta, about 8 years ago when the Earth people where there, a few stranglers were left behind. My friends wife Kathy & her sister were mountain biking & watched 2 very dirty, long haired guys w/ big bowie knifes, get water. When they spotted Kathy & her sister, they started babbling something while they walked quickly closer to them up the hill side. They were chased for about a half a mile though the woods. Kathy is now armed. A friend of my dads, Dailmer, was strangled w/ a chain, had a broken arm & was shot many times for his pay check in the back woods, outside of Negley Ohio but they caught they murderers in Texas. Did you ever hear of the Mahue murder, my step uncle went to prison for that one. I live in the rural PA, WV, OHIO area so let me tell you, I know people who would slit you for a couple bucks. Luckily most of these aren't on the ATV trails or have interest in us ATV riders but then again it only takes one, so be prepared especially if your families w/ you. You never know, you might run into one of my relatives.

I have heard stories about pot fields in kentucky and the things they do to protect them, like spikes in a puddle...

but where I ride I really never have to worry about any of that stuff.....but if I do, I guess I am going to either run them over, or beat them with my winch hook and cable....I dont have a fire arm, Im not 21, and I dont have the $$, just now got the quad paid for...a poor college student for you....but I know I will get one when I have the $$, its my right :-)

I, too, have a license to carry a concealed weapon in IN. I believe in the right to bear arms. I usually do not carry a weapon riding however. What concerns me is that people on here are "if someone is stealing my quad" or "my tv" or stealing anything DOES NOT grant you permission to use a gun/lethal force. If you shoot/kill someone trying to steal your quad, car, tv or whatever, you will be the one goin to jail for a very long time. Carrying a gun comes with a very high responsibility. If you pull it, it better be the last thing person that person sees. Other than that, no one should even know you have it, unless hunting of course. You can not shoot someone for stealing from you, unless they are INSIDE your home. If you shoot them better make sure they are dead or they can then sue you. I must admit I'm a little concerned on what I'm reading here. I don't feel that many of you really realize what a responsibilty comes with carrying a firearm and when you should and should not use it. God help us.

stebob, it's very reassuring to read your poste. I'm glad not everyone with a gun is just waiting for an excuse to use it.

I'm still really surprised at how paranoid so many people here seem to be. I'd really hate to always be afraid that I was going to get robbed or attacked and have to carry a gun to feel more secure. I don't even lock the doors to my house or car 90% of the time, and being robbed is waayyy down on my list of things I worry about.

Seriously, I think most of you guys must watch too many movies.

Guys, it is the few of you making a stink about it. Please DO NOT judge me if I choose to exercise my freedom. I didnt say that any jerk that comes along is going to see the end of my gun. My uncle who rides w/me didnt know I carried a 22MAG until I said something about getting my gun wet. If we here in the states choose to carry a firearm (concealed) what is the problem? I am sure you have many freedoms that I dont agree with but far be it from me to judge you.......we dont watch too many movies, we just like to have and celebrate our freedom. And yes stebob (I hope you mean it) we need God's blessing everyday.
