Got the front end all apart on my 96 Scram 4x4....replacing all 8 bearings, all seals, and brakes. I noticed that the lower part of the strut (the aluminum body) is cracked between the bolts where the brake caliper goes on. I figured this was rare...until I checked the other side....ITS CRACKED TOO! WTF! Is this a common thing? Its probably been cracked for a long time. I cleaned the one side up real good with brake-clean, gouged out allong the crack with a Dremmel, then filled the crack with JB Weld. Do you think this will last?

 

Don't know......jb weld is good for almost 4000 psi though.......if that is of any comfort.

Well, cracks be damned! They've likely been there for years....soooo....back together everything went, new bearings, seals....clearances checked....JB-Weld the cracks....new brake pads....test drive in the snow: she's all good! Removed oil injection, lowered pilot jet to 27.5 (from 30), and added Boyesson reeds....its a whole different machine!....Can't wail for camping season now!

 

my neighbor has a 96 scrambler and a 96 trailblazer. so far i have had to replace both aluminum strut housings on the scrambler. the first time i was just doing a regular service on it and replacing brake pads and putting new tires on when i noticed that it was cracked. I had it tig welded, but i checked it a couple weeks later and it was cracked eve worse thean before, i ordered a new one through polaris, and replaced it, a couple months later he wrecked the machine and i had to replace the rear axle, all 4 rims, and the right control arm, i then noticed that the strut housing on this side was cracked too. i think that polaris used weaker strut housings in machines that were 96 and older, as i put the new ones on in 98 and he has not had any problems with it since then.
