While doing donuts in 2 wheel drive on my 99 xplorer the front end locked up and i busted a yoke on the right hand axle.I put on a new one and it happened again a slower speed.Can anyone help me out?I now have to run in 4 wheel drive all the time so i don't bust something again.Oh yeah i change my oil in the hubs often.Thanks guys. You shouldn't do donuts with a Polaris 4x4, The rear wheel drive it what drives the front axel and when you spin the rear wheels the hillard clutch on the end of the front axel spins very fast, the centrifugal force of the axel spinning will throw the rollers on the hillard clutch out and engage the front wheel. The front wheel is not moving or is moving slowly and when the hillard throws the rollers out to engage something has got to give in your case it it the yoke.
Now you may find the spring is bad in the hillard, but that is rare.
Bottom line is try not to spin your Polaris 4x4 in 2 wd mode.

Makes sense but something has got to be used somewhere.I now have close to 5000 miles on it and it started doing it around 4500 miles and had never done it before.My brother has 7000 miles on his 96 Sportsman and was beating the crap out of his in 2 wheel drive right next to me and nothing like that has happened to him. Some thing had to go wrong in your hub I cut doughnuts all the time on both of mine and nothing ever happens.And i dont know how many mile are on my machines but when i broke the speedo off of the sportsman it had 2300 and that was a year or so ago and my magnum was about the same but 3 years ago.

Change your garter springs. Also back the pole gap off just so there is a little bit of an air gap between the armature plate and the inner strut housing sleeve. But I believe it is the garter springs loosing there tension letting the rollers move out.

Like others have said, replace your garter springs. But also, replace what they call the "armature plate" in each axle. This steel ring is what is attracted to the magnetic coil in the axle housing when 4x4 is engaged, it has three tabs which contact the hilliard clutch and the friction of this plate against the magnetized coil imparts drag on the clutch which forces the rollers outward, thus locking in the hub. These plates can become magnetized themselves, so they are attracted to the coil even when the 4x4 switch is off, so its always in 4x4. Or possibly in your case it is dragging enough to lock in that hub when your rears are spinning. They are cheap, about $6 each, and easy to install so its worth trying. My Scrambler was locked in all the time. I changed fluid, garter springs, played with the torque on the hub nuts - everything. Then I noticed these plates stuck to my screwdriver, only slightly, but enough. I changed them and it has been great since.

Usually, if changing oil doesn't cure it, it is either the springs, plates, or bearing preload. The springs & plates aren't that expensive, so if it were me, I would do both at once. You will need a good inch-pound torque wrench to do the bearings right. Sounds like you know what you are doing, but I thought I would mention it.
