My brother-in-law has a a 2001 sportsmen 400 4x4, it has around 110 miles on it, and when you hit the brakes it makes a wierd clattering noise that sounds like it is coming from the rear. I think it sounds like a cv joint getting into a bind, but I may not be right. Has anybody else run into this?? We would like to have an idea of what it is before we take it to the dealer.

Thanks in advance
Ronnie

Are you locking up the rear brake? Reason i ask is my 400 Sportsman has a chatter when I lock up rear brakes. I think it's the pads chattering against the brake clip which holds pads in place in brake caliper. Other thing to check is see if there is rocks or anything else caught up around the pad and caliper area. If you have an air compressor blow evrything out good. Just a couple things to try.

it happens any time you hit the brakes. it does not matter if it is the hand brake or the foot brake
