I've heard that you can put a Polaris 700 belt on a 500HO. I'm tempted to try this but wanted to find out the pro's and con's if any. I'm looking for a little more low end torque but don't want to harm the machine in the process. Give me the scoop..

 

Would like to know also. I know that they are 2 different part #'s, but other than that...........who knows.

VG...thanks for the link. It helped out alot! Called dealer and he said the only difference is that the belt for 700 is stronger. I smoked mine this weekend(my fault)so I think I will try the 700 belt. He gave me price of $39 also. Thanks again VG!!!

I just happen to be a week or two ahead of you with basically wanting to know the same thing as you. Hopefully, the expertise passed on is correct and that it adds belt life, besides low end torque, yet does not add additional wear to other components. I would think it would not induce addition wear on other components, unless your hot-doggin it a lot, but then again, if your doing that with any atv, it probably won't matter what you have on your machine, something is going to wear out quicker.

VG, do you think it will give it any low end torgue? I dont see how. You should of seen the smoke coming from my machine this weekend........I was trying to climb a steep sand dune in high. So I guess it is time to change it!

 

Well, u guys i went out and bought the 700 belt for my 500 and let me tell u, i could wheelie easier w/ the old belt than i can w/ the 700's belt, and my old one was worn bad too!!!! I dont know what u guys are doing that im not but i dont see any improvement. Just writing to let people know that its not any different. YET!! Im hoping that the belt maybe needs a break in period, but i doubt it. If anyone has any other cheap power upgrades, let me know!!! Oh and one other thing, I saw a YELLOW Sp 700 today!!! Holy s*@t!! All i can say is wow. It was damn sharp.



'96 Sportsman 500

In your signature you state you have a 96 Sportsman. The 96 does not have EBS. The 700 belt is for EBS models only. Your older belt will work better than the one you installed.

 

I am going to try it tomorrow. Well let you know. I have a clutch kit in my SP, so dont know if I am going to be able to tell anything.

 

I might be able to help you a little here. The belts when made have a release agent (like wax) that is on the belt. Snowmobile racers who never have much time to break in a new belt or wait for the thing to clean itself off use a belt cleaner. I am not a racer but I use Dawn dish soap and scrub it down to avoid the time it takes to get the best grip. Rinse it clean, dry it off and you should get a whole lot better grip. You will not get a noticeable belt performance increase without cleaning it or putting a few miles / hours on it to get it cleaned off.

With the comments about EBS vs non EBS I cannot help with.
