running with no muffler, can you??

I would like to know if there are any dangers with running without the muffler on a '00 Sportsman 500. I got a crack in mine and I am going to weld it in my ag.sci. class on Monday. I already took it off and I was wondering if it is safe for the engine/ebs to go riding with it tomorrow. I know it is loud but where I'll be I won't bother anyone so don't worry about the noise factor. I just want to make sure that no engine damage will occur. I don't plan to run like this for more than a few days but I will have to for tomorrow. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I rode my TB with no muffler..No power at all.
And i don't think it would be really good on the moter since you are losing all your back pressure.
If you really need to ride you could run over to napa and get a Muffler repair kit. It comes with a tube of paste type stuff and some 'muffler' tape.
I had a split in my honda muffler and i did that. it held for the 3 months i had it i reckon it is still on there.

mudman, you will make plenty of power without your muffler.trailblazer rides a 2-stroke they need the backpressure. the real question is will your sportsman run too lean ? my guess is no, not as long as you are running the stock air filter.if your worried about stop and check your spark plug after you have been ridding awhile.

When I took my muffler off my 97 scrambler500, I lost tons of power. It sputtered when I gased it. All low end power was gone, it started off like our old 5hp go cart. Just repair it with what that other guy said. I wouldn't ride without a muffler, not worth anything going wrong or a several hundred bucks of engine damage.

Yes,
You can run without the muffler, but you will lose a significant amount of torque. Be careful that you don't get into a situation where you are throttling hard to turn the tires (like stuck on a log) because it will be harder on the belt because of the lack of torque. One other thing, I wouldn't go playing in deep water while just running straight pipe... if it dies, youre in deep ---------
One other thing.. I have noticed that the factory muffler springs are very weak.. After snorkeling my factory muffler, I went to the local hardware store and purchased some stiffer springs... No more leaks where the pipe and muffler join.!!
