Sportsman on the dunes
#3
The 500 will do fine. When a big dune is coming up, just get up some speed and you can go anywhere. I rode my Scrambler 500 in the dunes a few weeks ago with stock tires and it was awesome. In four wheel drive you can accellerate plenty fast and it will get you into and out of anything.

Silver Lake Dunes?
I've never had my Sportsman there but have gone with friends that brought them. They do realy well, but the extra weight and stock tires slow them down quite a bit. They went up all the hills, just no air at the top.
On one trip there was a guy with an older Yamaha Kodiak, it had huge padles on it, but still couldn't get up the big hills. He had more tire then power.
The sportsmans were doing way better then him.

I went to Silver lake with my totally stock 400 Scrambler and did very well on stock tires. You will have no
problems. The Paddles will allow for more speed but for a first trip stockers will be fine.
As for the Sportsman have not see any out there. We did see a few guys on Yamaha Kodiac that could not
make it up TEST HILL. I think the WEIGHT is killer in the sand. You can not compare the 500 Scrambler with
the 500 Sportsman. I would thing the Sportsman should do OK if they keep the speed up. I had a Trailblazer
there earlier in the summer and it sucked bad with out a good set of light paddles.

You don't see a lot of utility quads going up the larger dunes. They usually just dig down. I think you would still have fun just cruising around on some of the smaller stuff though. Go and try it out, see if you like it before you spend money on sand tires. If you do buy tires, I would go with a very wide tire, without a lot of paddle.
