Has anyone ever made a chain tensioner?

Has anybody ever made their own chain tensioner, instead of buying one from HPD or something like that? My chain is stretched from the almost-concentric drive and repeated jumps. I need a tensioner before I destroy the sprockets and bearings, but would like to make one instead of buying one.
Any pointers?
