Guys,
I have a question. I have the opportunity to by a polaris scrambler but the guy took the 400 motor out and he put it into a trailblazer frame. That leaves the 250 motor and the scrambler frame. Will this combo work? I know it will lack power but will it bolt up to the drivetrain? The price is right, that is why I am considering it. If it doesn't work, what is a reasonable price to pay for a 400 motor? Who would be the best source to get one from? Without spending a wad of cash.

I wouldn't even think about getting it, even if the price is right, a scrammbler with a 250 motor, it's just a little heavier trailblazer is all.
I am assuming that the scrambler is 2wd drive and dosn't have the front diff.
Don't waste the cash, but just curious, how much does he want for it.
I wouldn't touch it unless the 400 came with it, and I got if for cheap, and I made sure it was in someone good condition.
What year is it also?

It does sound scary

Why would one take out a Scrambler Motor to put on a trailbalzer Frame? Oh, I know they wanted worse suspension for a crapy ride. LOL

I would say IF the price was right,Like well well under what a used Trailblazer is going for, And the Guy knows half of what he is doing,And you want a Trailblazer (SCRAMAZER). I would say It should be ok. The two chassis are very close, And I can not think of any reasons why it wouldn't work, Besides the fact of why would anybody do such a thing.
Use you best Judgement. It is hard to say if it is or is not worth it, not knowing what you are going to pay. If you want a Trailblazer there are tons forsale used. On the other hand if you want a Trailblazer(SCRAMAZER) you could get one with the better suspension.

Good luck

Yes the Scrambler is a 4x4 so it does have the front differential. The guy took the Scrambler motor out and biult it and then put it into the Trailblazer frame to race it in sand drags. That is why it is left with the odd combo. Like I said in the original post, Do you have any idea where I can get a 400 motor for a reasonable price? Don't bash too hard because for the price I am getting it at I can quadruple my money by parting it out. I just wanted to know if it would work.

dillas23,

Assuming that the motor bolts into the right places (mounts) it could in theory work. A 4x4 Scrambler 250? Sounds like something to let your girl friend ride. It's an interesting concept.

Well, a 250 4x4 is not a new concept

It should be like a 250 POLARIS EXPORER 4x4 with a little better suspension.

Not sure if it bolts up or not but if it does it won't be a bad quad. I am sure it can't be to hard to make it work. You could get the old Trail Boss 250 with 4x4, and they were a good trail quad. The Boss was a even heavier. The extra weight won't kill the 250. Don't forget you will be dropping the weight of the cooling system. You should only be about 50 lbs heavier than a blazer.

Oh ya, I forgot to mention, you will need to make some gearing changes. This will be something you will need to play around with, I would keep gearing down until you find the right combination to make up for the extra weight.

Seams to me it would not be worth your time, that alone worth any money.
One thing to think about would be just using the 400 frame and going to the junkyard, find a doner motor from a bike, and Wala! instant fun!
You would probably need to pitch out the 4X4 system, and possibly the belt drive tranny, but with the right motor, you could realy have a great quad.
I've thought about this for a while and will some day give it a shot.
The scrambler 400 frame is big, roomy, steel (easy for welding) and comes with decent suspension and handling.
Junkyards are full of powerfull twin and 4 cylinder bike motors.
In the 2 stroke choices any air cooled open class MX motor would be great, CR 500, YZ 490 and so on.
A common 4 stroke motor would be the Yamaha 650 air cooled twin. Yamaha made oodles of 650 specials and special II bikes.
The motors were also successfully hoped up for flat track racers.
The motor tranny combo would seam a fairly easy transplant, but its hard to say without actually taking some measurements.
If I could pic up a Scrambler frame real cheep, thats what I would do with it.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
