Who knows Magnum 4x4?
#1
Just picked up a '95 Magnum 4x4 for the wife. It has 2100 miles. What goes wrong with these, that I should watch for? The swing arm bushings are sound, the rear chain front sprocket is new, the steering stem bushing seems tight, the machine was apparently well maintained, the jetting is set for high alt (10,000) and it will be ridden between 5-12000 feet. Front brake pads are recent, discs are pretty smooth. Engine has reportedly had exclusively synthetic oil with changes about every 500 miles. It has K&N air filter. I know more about 350 and 400L machines than this 4 stroke. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I have a 96 425 Magnum and it is basicly a sound machine. The troubles I have had are mainly caused by rough use.Like 1. broke tranny shaft(was in deep river gravel)2.rear axle bearings (not made to do jumps)3.left front cv joint and hub(too much deep mud)4.tie rod ends every year(not my fault)5. bent A arm and steering post(let babysitter ride it).with all of what has went wrong with this machine I would say it is as bullett proof as any quad around.Only motor trouble was I had to adjust the valve after 5 years of riding.Oh yea I broke the speedo off the bars 3 years ago with 2200 on it so i have no idea how many miles are one it.GREAT MACHINE.

ftwflh, thanks for the encouraging words. Tell me about the clutch work, what did it accomplish along with the pipe? The machine has all the power in stock form, jetted properly with K&N filter, that my wife needs. The clutch seems to engage a little more abruptly than 2 stroke polarises I've owned, at a slightly higher rpm. We like how quiet the stock exhaust setup is, with the liquid cooling.

It sounds like someone has put in a green or white clutch spring. If you dont like the higher engagement let me know if you want a stock spring for ir i have 2 stock ones and would trade one with you.But with the other springs your engaement is higher but it puts you into the power range of the machine faster. To check what spring is in it take off the PVT cover, mark the primary clutch where you can get it back where it is,pull the center bolt holding the clutch on then take out the 6 smaller bolts holding the spring in.Thats the spring you want to know what color ot is.LET me know.As for the muffler I have the stock one on this machine to keep it quite. The only real pain in the butt is keeping the chains tight.Hope you have as much good use of yours as I have mine.

scosho,
i bought a '95 425 Magnum 4x4, rode it hard, sold it to my bro who continues to use it to this day farming in Vt.
it gets one oil change and lube job per year since new and it's ONE GREAT QUAD!
the fenders are scratched-to-hell, but it runs like new!
good luck with yours,
nice choice!

Mtpockets (I got it after a few seconds, pretty funny handle), glad to hear it. A bombproof Polaris, whodathunkit? Ftwflh, we're moving next week, so it will be a while before I get wrenching on the Mag. Will let you know if I have a spring for you. Thanks for your experience, it is way better than reading a manual.
