I will be returning to wisconsin at the end of june to break in my new scrambler 400 x. I have the hpd trail pipe, rcr air box mod,v-force II reeds and spacer kit to put on when the break in is done. My question is how fat do i start? The pipe comes with a 250 and a 260 main. After reading all the jetting info i could find on here i'm confused. Some say you need to lean it out after putting in the v-force but then i'm also adding the air box mod wich needs to be richer. Because of the time zone i can never hook up with hpd tech. Anyone running this same set up so i know where to begin. Ken, Mike anyone. This two stroke rookie could use a pointer. Thanks

Hey I have this exact same setup except I have the Boyesen Rad Valve instead of the V-force but it's pretty much the same. I am running a 260 main jet with the needle set at the second notch from the top of the needle and it runs great! I also installed the pilot jet that Rick sent with the HPD pipe. I believe it is a 30. I run at around 3000 ft elevation. Shawn

Shawn, thanks for the reply. But i don't think your set up will hold true for me. I belive i am well under 3000 ft. elevation in my neck of the woods. Matt

Matt, Don't mean to state the obvious, but start out rich and lean down. When in doubt error on the side of rich. Start out tuning your idle-1/4 throttle. Hold it steady for about a 1/4 mile, use the kill switch, take a plug reading. Black is rich, cocoa brown is best, white is lean. I think Cycleworks.com has some pics to help. It's a really good idea to pick up an analog EGT gauge from HPD, Hot Seat, RCR, and use that in conjunction with your plug readings. Just remember to start out with the lower throttle settings, and work your way up. Takes some time, but the end result is a great performing quad. And being up in my neck of the woods, remember to richen things up for winter riding.

Hope this helps, and hope I didn't tell you something you already knew.

Ken

Thanks ken, any advice is great. I've spent alot of time with the thumpers, but like i said before i'm a newbie to the black magic of the two stroke. But from hanging in this fourm for a year and a half i've picked up a thing or two from you vets. I know once i get it down i'll be very happy. Hope to see ya in B.R. Falls this summer.
