My father bought a 1999 magnum 500 brand new and now has around 1500 miles on it.Since the time he bought it, it has never had much getgo.Since my father mostly rode with 400 honda's,kawa's and yamahas it never really bothered him even though my xplorer and my brothers 96 sportsman beat him bad all the time.We leave him of the line like if he was on 400 foreman and his top speed is only around 50 mph on the counter. He's going full blast and we are cruising next to him at 3/4 trottle.

Now that his friends have gotten some bigbores,he getting his *** kicked big time.So a couple of weeks ago he decided to get a good tune up done on it.They set the timing, carb, air filter, belt, clutches and i think that's about it.He get back thinking he's going to cream us but it's the same old story.

So we take the clutches out of my brother's SP and tried that but it stayed the same.On my brothers bike when you floor it in neutrel,it hits right away and revs up pretty high, but on dad's bike it hesitates a little and do not seem to want to rev very much.We are pretty much confused right now and that is why i'm asking you help. Any ideas. Thanks

Try swaping out the carb. with the 96 sp. you may be jetted wrong or have a bad seal on the diaphram, this will give you a vacuum leak and cause the slide to lift slowly and or not all the way.

If it sputters when you take off then t could be the fuel filter. I agree with the carb idea seacow had also.

I asked my father and he said that it had the correct jet in it and the carb was dialed in like it is supposed to be.Is there a way to plug a vacuum gauge on the carb and do you know what it's supposed to be at? The fuel filter has been changed.

It does not sputter off takeoff it just seems to rev slower and not as high as the sp.Thanks i'll get back to you guys if we find the problem.

Check the buttons in both clutches and the helix for wear.
