feed my need for speed
#1
Here's the scoop, I bought a 98 Polaris Ultra sled, 680cc triple, very fast. I went to Canada and rode over 1000 mis. with a friend who is a very aggressive driver, both on his 00 700xc and on his yz250. I rode with him last year with my Bayou 400 (HA!), blew it up and bought a 99 Scrambler 400. I always thought he was a little crazy, but after going to Canada with him, and quickly realizing that aggressive riding is the only way to ride, I came home and am going through withdrawal. I know there is nothing that will compare with the power of a 680cc on the snow, and the handling, but I have become very aggessive in my riding style, and am trying to decide what to do. Should I sell the Scrambler and buy a 400ex due to the excellent handling, sporty feel, quick downshifting and snap in the corners. Or should I modify the Scrambler with a roller clutch, pipe, jetting, split brake system, and air box? I'm trying to decide which would give me the biggest rush, like sledding, and allow for the more aggressive style of riding.
I hear people say that no matter how much you modify a Polaris, it won't compare to a Honda as far as handling. I love the Scrambler for the 2-stroke snap, ease of riding, and on demand 4wd for in the mud, snow, etc. But was wondering if the 400ex will handle better, and thus allow for more aggressive riding. I've never rode a 400ex, other than a test ride, but have ridden a Warrior for a half day, and although it handled decent, was lacking in power. I'm concerned the 400ex won't have the power I need, and mods will be too $$$. I also am just a little leary of 4-strokes since my Bayou cost me $2000 to rebuild. Not that a 400ex will blow up, but there is a lot more $ and ? when building or repairing a 4 stroke.
This is really a dilemna for me. When I say I ride aggressively, even my friend who I ride snow and dirt with says I've gone from a novice to what he calls a "power mad 2-stroke freak".
That week in Canada on those trails getting the feel of how to slide into turns, how to keep the engine at the right rpm for the decelerating clutches and then palming it coming out of the turn until you see the next turn, then hitting the hooks until the sled is sliding into the turn...well it just got me hooked on riding ***** out!
I now need your advice on where I should go from here. I posted here in the Polaris forum because I think I will get the most honest answers, and I'm guessing there are plenty of Polaris ATV owners who have sleds also. Any advice will be appreciated.
