Sportsman 700 -- AAEN performance
#1
After several attempts with my dealer I am still not happy with a couple things on my sportsman 700. The belt is slipping way to much and the take off does not seem to be what it should be. I called aaen performance today and ordered the 38 flatside carb, muffler, clutch kit and a complete secondary roller, and the dealer will be replacing the belt. Anybody else done these kind of mods that can tell me what to expect, also does the carb come with proper jetting or is this going to be a headache I have to deal with? I am about fed up and am seriously considering going back to a 500, the 500 never slipped a belt. I was going up a sand hill at the badlands in indiana a couple days ago and the belt slipping nearly cost me a trip down the hill backwards. I was climbing in high because it was a pretty long hill and i had a good run at it at the bottom --- too fast for low. As I approached the top a buddy that was already up the hill started warning me to slow up a bit because there was a drop off on the other side. By the way he and another friend were already at the top because they had climbed it prior to me on their 500's in high. After I let off the gas and started to get back into it the belt started slipping and I was done with all forward motion. The hill was not all that steep, in fact I was able to hold my self in place with the barakes long enough for my buddies to grab the front rack and keep me from going back down. Any other suggestions on what may be the problem and what I can do to solve it. Thanks

Thanks, will try them. What will the roller secondary do for me? I really dont understand it but the tech at aaen suggested it, so I thought I might as well get it put on while doing the other mods. Thanks again!

That should be a good belt you have on there. The secondary roller will probably help a lot, depending on what helix thay send you. Do you want more bottom end or top end? You can change the secondary spring and really get the belt to hold on tight in the rear, but chaning the front might cause more slippage at slower speeds.
That 700 should really rock. What size is the stock carb? Did you put exhaust on it? It must really need some help but 700cc should be able to make 50-55 hp easily.

Hello, you must have something wrong there. First off you are sure doing alot of mods at once, that is not usually good as for you do not know what did what after because you did not go in steps. I have a sp700 production date of 3/23/02 and it doesn't have belt slippage any more than the sp500 or scrambler in fact most of the time if you hit the throttle you are spinning the tires and there for the hole shot doesn't seem as strong as you would think it should be but agian that is tire slippage. I did put in a mild clutch kit from hot seats using the stock springs but new helix and weights it has a stronger mid range at thirty it will lift the front susp to it's limits but not get the tires off the ground because of the weight. but goose it in low and if you have good traction your on your back with it on top of you. the stock carb size as a 36mm for the person asking and yes it will be a great mod but only if you open up your air intake you need to draw more air in thus The reason polaris did'nt go with a 38-40mm to start with. you see the stock carb can provide more than enough fuel so it is not starving for that. the problem is your engine only produces so many ponnies in accordance with the air volume that moves thru it. So when you say you are going up to a 38mm this is the size of the bore of the carb. this is a step in the right direction but as you said you are also upgrading you exhaust to move more air, that is also right, ONE BIGGGG PROBLEM I did not hear you say you were making air box mods.!!! you see polaris was concerned about keeping it as water tight as poss. so with the restriction of the snokel as far as amout of air that can pass thru it no need for a lager mm carb because they can't get enought air to it. there have been people who cut the snorkel at the wider square base and run vacuum cleaner hose from it as a snorkel as the hose is much larger than the opening at the tip of the stock snorkel. you can do this with a silicone sealer and some small self threading screws. you will also need a high flow filter such as k&n or like product. ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS IT WILL HELP YOU A LOT IF YOU DO NOT FEED IT ENOUGH AIR IN, OR CAN NOT MOVE THE BUNRT GASES OUT FAST ENOUGH EITHER.. YOU CAN BUY THE BEST CARB OUT THERE AND IT WON'T DO YOU A BIT OF GOOD. GOODLUCK AND I WILL LET YOU KNOW HOW MY MODS DO AS FOR I AM GOING TO PUT ON A 40MM CARB BUT IN TRIING TO KEEP IT AS WATER TIGHT I AM GOING TO TAKE THE TUBES FROM A SEADOO XP (1997) AND MAKE IT LIKE A RAM AIR TYPE OF SET UP HE EXHAUST IS GOING TO BE A CUSTOM PIPE AND MOD THE STOCK MUFFLER TO HOLLOW IT AND HAVE THREE EXIT TUBES. I ALREADY PUSH THE SPEEDO TO IT'S LIMITS OF SIXTY SO I KNOW IT IS FASTER THAN THAT BUT WHEN I AM DONE WE WILL RUN IT ON A GUN AND SEE WHERE IT IS AT AT THIS TIME THERE MIGHT NEED TO BE A BIG TIME CLUTCH MOD FOR MORE GRIP BUT AT THIS TIME THERE IS NO EXTRA SLIPPAGE. Hey thanks for the tip, I was also thinking about the air (intake)but I was not sure how I was going to do it. I thought abought cutting the intake like you said, but I just was not sure how I was going to keep it water tight. If you have any pictures of your setup or anybody else that has changed the intake snorkel could you email them to me. My slippage is not tires, it is definately belt! If I could get the belt problem fixed, then I should be able to make good use of the extra horsepower, I like the machine, just can't handle the belt slipping. Do you think it could be just a bad belt or what else might it be. My mechanic has had the belt out and said it looked fine, that was when I only had about 25 miles on it and started noticing the belt slipping. It slipped enough on my first trip out that I took it back then and it has slipped several times since --to the point of smoking! Very dangerous on hills, and these are hills it should be able to make with no problem. I did C.P.R. on a guy this year that did not make a hill and had his wheeler land on top of him as he tried to ride it down backwards, I don't want to be the next guy lying there not breathing! By the way stomper, where is Hanover Park -- How far are you from Peoria?

I will have my wifes brother put some pics on but it won,t be until later this summer as i am going up north for a couple weeks to put some miles on. e-mail me if you need any help. Well, first impressions are good, lots more power and acceleration and sounds better too. I only got to ride it for a couple of minutes though and the intake boot that I thought I was going to get lucky and not have crack - cracked. I pick it up again tomorrow, and am riding all day Mon. and Tue. at St. Joes park in Missouri, so I should be able to let everybody know Wed. how it worked out.

Well, I am back. The mods definately made a difference! The new belt did not slip and the 700 runs very strong! It is running rich so I have to try to get that worked out, but other than that I am very impressed. It is kind of loud now.
