Would someone please describe the stock air filter on a 2001 400 Scrambler. I just bought this quad and while going over it I found what looks like a K&N air filter. (Wire mesh pleats with cotton or some kind of fiber between the mesh screens) The manual describes a foam pre-filter which this quad does not have. The current filter has no brand stamped on it anywhere, just numbers. Just want to be sure what I have before I start cleaning it. Thanks.

It could be the stock paper filter that came with the quad new. It cannot be washed it is a throw away filter. If you have a K&n it will have a red tint to it from the K&N filter oil. It should say K&N on the filter somewhere if it is. I run a twin air cause it filters smaller dust particles.

Thanks Ronnie,

I know its not a paper filter and it does have a red tint like K&N oil. It just doesn't say K&N on it. Do I need the foam pre-filter or is that only if I'm using the stock paper filter?

just looked at my old one and it is white paper with a foam outer wrap. If it isn't dirty just keep using it until you want a new one. Does it have a foam outerwrap. I have a 99 model so they may be different.
